SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 179
BY SENATOR WALSWORTH 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends John M. McCallum of Cedar Creek School upon his
selection as an alternate representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership
Congress in Los Angeles, California.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend John M. McCallum of Cedar Creek School upon his selection as an alternate2
representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Los3
Angeles, California.4
WHEREAS, John M. McCallum attended the Louisiana Hugh O'Brian Youth5
(HOBY) Leadership Seminar, held from June 4 through June 6, 2010, in Baton Rouge,6
Louisiana; and7
WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program was established in 19588
by popular actor Hugh O'Brian following a visit to Africa, where he met with famed9
humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer and was inspired to create an organization designed to10
encourage young people to take leadership roles in society; and11
WHEREAS, John M. McCallum was joined by one hundred twenty one other young12
leaders who represented their respective high schools through Louisiana; and13
WHEREAS, these young individuals discussed the core values of the HOBY14
organization, including the impact of volunteering in one's community, the partnership in15
community, and an appreciation and need for diversity in our culture; and16
WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress is held every year in17
conjunction with a major United States university, and the World Leadership Congress18 SR NO. 179

brings together young men and women from around the world for a week-long intensive1
educational leadership conference; and2
WHEREAS, John M. McCallum was chosen as an alternate to represent Louisiana3
at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress, which is being held July 23 through July4
30, 2010, at the University of California in Los Angeles, California; and5
WHEREAS, in September of each year, HOBY sends nomination materials to every6
accredited public and private high school in the United States, and each high school is7
invited to select one sophomore with demonstrated leadership abilities and potential to8
attend regional spring HOBY seminars; and9
WHEREAS, at the World Leadership Congress, students learn firsthand about other10
cultures and opinions, for friendships, and exchange ideas in an environment where they can11
feel comfortable in open discussions with their peers, learning to voice how they have12
shaped and formed their own views about the role of leadership in society; and13
WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian believes the most important thing in education is to teach14
young people to think for themselves, which, as a result of the more than three hundred15
thousand HOBY alumni, has influenced and inspired young people to become more involved16
in their communities; and17
WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress seeks to inspire high18
school students to excel as leaders, using friendship with others as a catalyst for their19
learning experience.20
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana21
does hereby commend John M. McCallum upon his selection as an alternative representative22
of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World leadership Congress in Los Angeles, California, and23
does hereby recognize the pride and honor that this wonderful young man has brought to his24
family, friends, and community and the state of Louisiana.25
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to John26
