Commends Haynesville High School football coach Alton "Red" Franklin upon his induction into the National High School Hall of Fame Class of 2010. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Haynesville High School football coach Alton "Red" Franklin upon his2 induction into the National High School Hall of Fame Class of 2010.3 WHEREAS, Alton "Red" Franklin played his first year of college football at the4 University of Alabama, but he soon returned to beloved Louisiana, where he played end for5 the Louisiana College Wildcats; and6 WHEREAS, after an 8-2 senior season, he went on to receive his bachelor of science7 degree in education in 1961 and began what would be an exceptional career in coaching high8 school football; and9 WHEREAS, after graduating from Louisiana College in 1961, Coach Franklin served10 as an assistant football coach at Marksville for two years before taking a job in Springhill11 for three years before he found his way and destiny took him to Haynesville High School in12 1966; and13 WHEREAS, after a stellar thirty-five year coaching career with the Golden Tornados,14 Alton "Red" Franklin retired after the 2001 season as the second-winningest football coach15 in Louisiana history and fifteenth nationally; and16 WHEREAS, Coach Franklin won 367 games, losing only 76, and compiled a17 winning percentage of .822, while his teams won 11 state football championships during18 SR NO. 186 SLS 10RS-5413 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 four different decades, two in the 1970s, two in the 1980s, six in the 1990s and a final1 championship in 2000; and2 WHEREAS, Coach Franklin and his team accomplished eight undefeated seasons,3 four of them consecutively, finished second in four other seasons, all while winning 274 district championships, participating in 31 playoff contests and shutting out opponents 1915 times; and6 WHEREAS, Coach Franklin was named state football coach of the year six times and7 district coach of the year 23 times, resulting in his induction into the Louisiana High School8 Hall of Fame; and9 WHEREAS, now Coach Franklin is being recognized by the National High School10 Hall of Fame Association for his exceptional achievements in football and for the huge11 difference he made in the lives of so many young athletes.12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana13 does hereby extend its highest and most heartfelt commendations to Coach Alton "Red"14 Franklin for his outstanding contributions to the people of the state of Louisiana as he taught15 his players, associates and fans the true meaning of sportsmanship, hard work, and victory,16 on the field and off. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Alton18 "Red" Franklin and to Haynesville High School.19 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Heyward Jeffers.
