Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 187 BY SENATOR CHEEK A RESOLUTION To commend Marlene Cox of Evanagel Christian Academy upon her selection as an alternate representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C. WHEREAS, Marlene Cox attended the Louisiana Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar, held from June 5 through June 7, 2009, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program was established in 1958 by popular actor Hugh O'Brian, following a visit to Africa where he was inspired, after meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer, to create an organization designed to encourage the discussion and methods by which young people can take a leadership role in society; and WHEREAS, Marlene Cox was joined by one hundred fourteen other young leaders representing their high schools throughout Louisiana, where they discussed the core values of the HOBY organization, including the impact of volunteering in one's community, the partnership in community, and an appreciation and need for diversity in our culture; and WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress is held every year in conjunction with a major United States university, and the World Leadership Congress (WLC) brings together young men and women from around the world for a week-long intensive, educational summer program; and WHEREAS, Marlene Cox was chosen as an alternate to represent Louisiana in the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress being held July 25 through July 31, 2009, at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, in September of each year, HOBY sends nomination materials to every accredited public and private high school in the United States under the auspices of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and each high school is invited to select one sophomore with demonstrated leadership abilities and potential to attend regional SR NO. 187 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 spring HOBY seminars; and WHEREAS, after the spring seminar, one male and one female from each state are awarded a space at the upcoming World Leadership Congress; and WHEREAS, at the World Leadership Congress, students learn firsthand about other cultures and opinions, forming friendships, and exchanging ideas in an environment where they can feel comfortable in open discussions with their peers, learning to voice how they have formed their own views about the role of leadership in society; and WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership believes the most important tenet in education is to teach young people to think for themselves, which, as a result of the more than three hundred thousand alumni, has influenced and inspired young people to become more involved in their community; and WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress seeks to inspire high school students to excel as leaders, using friendship with others as a catalyst for their learning experience. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Marlene Cox upon her selection as an alternate representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Washington, D.C., and does hereby recognize the pride and honor she has brought to the state of Louisiana through her achievement. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Marlene Cox. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
