CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of former U.S. Secretary of State
Warren M. Christopher
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of former United States2
Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of former United States Secretary of State5
Warren M. Christopher on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the age of eighty-five; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher's unwavering dedication to his country began early in7
his life with his service as an ensign in the United States Navy Reserves, and he served with8
valor in the Pacific during World War II; and9
WHEREAS, in 1945, Mr. Christopher received his undergraduate degree from the10
University of Southern California, and after attending Stanford Law School, he served as a11
clerk to Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas in 1949 and 1950; and12
WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher served as a deputy attorney general in the13
administration of Lyndon Johnson in the late 1960s; and14
WHEREAS, as deputy secretary of state during the administration of Jimmy Carter,15
Mr. Christopher played a highly significant role in the 1981 release of American hostages16
in Iran, and he was awarded the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of17
Freedom; and18
WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher served with great distinction and effectiveness as19
United States Secretary of State during the first term of the administration of William20 HCR NO. 9

Jefferson Clinton and was widely respected and admired for his achievements in foreign1
policy; and2
WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher is survived by his wife, Marie, and four children, Lynn,3
Scott, Thomas, and Kristen; and4
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the members of the legislature to take proper notice5
of Mr. Christopher's remarkable accomplishments and to express the immense pride of the6
people of the state of Louisiana in this truly great American.7
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby8
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of former United States Secretary9
of State Warren M. Christopher, does hereby record for posterity his singular achievements10
and contributions in a long and distinguished career of public service, and does hereby11
express enduring appreciation for the exemplary strides that he took on behalf of the12
American people, who continue to reap the benefits of his dedication and leadership and to13
embrace the honorable ideals that he embodied.14
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted15
to the family of Warren M. Christopher.16
