ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 First Extraordinary Session, 2011 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 9 BY REPRESENTATIVE BROSSETT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of former United States Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of former United States Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the age of eighty-five; and WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher's unwavering dedication to his country began early in his life with his service as an ensign in the United States Navy Reserves, and he served with valor in the Pacific during World War II; and WHEREAS, in 1945, Mr. Christopher received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California, and after attending Stanford Law School, he served as a clerk to Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas in 1949 and 1950; and WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher served as a deputy attorney general in the administration of Lyndon Johnson in the late 1960s; and WHEREAS, as deputy secretary of state during the administration of Jimmy Carter, Mr. Christopher played a highly significant role in the 1981 release of American hostages in Iran, and he was awarded the nation's highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher served with great distinction and effectiveness as United States Secretary of State during the first term of the administration of William Jefferson Clinton and was widely respected and admired for his achievements in foreign policy; and WHEREAS, Mr. Christopher is survived by his wife, Marie, and four children, Lynn, Scott, Thomas, and Kristen; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 9 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, it is the desire of the members of the legislature to take proper notice of Mr. Christopher's remarkable accomplishments and to express the immense pride of the people of the state of Louisiana in this truly great American. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of former United States Secretary of State Warren M. Christopher, does hereby record for posterity his singular achievements and contributions in a long and distinguished career of public service, and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the exemplary strides that he took on behalf of the American people, who continue to reap the benefits of his dedication and leadership and to embrace the honorable ideals that he embodied.
