HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12
BY REPRESENTATIVES DIXON, HAZEL, AND ROY
A RESOLUTION
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Major Earl K. Cross.
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Major Earl K. Cross on
Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at the age of seventy-eight; and
WHEREAS, Earl Cross retired with the rank of major from the Rapides Parish
Sheriff's Department after twenty-six years of dedicated and highly productive service; and
WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Major Cross was the president of
Lower Third Neighborhood Watch, a deacon at Oakland Baptist Church, a member of the
Bass Club, and one of the founders of Magnolia Peace Officers; and
WHEREAS, Major Cross was preceded in death by his parents, John and Phyllis
Young Cross, and his brother, John Cross, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, Major Cross is survived by his wife, Lillie B. Hallman Cross; four sons,
Earl Cross, Jr., and his wife Sherrie, Travis Cross, Harry Gilliam and his wife Veronica, and
Larry Gilliam and his wife Thomasine; three daughters, Phyllis Cross Bowman, Alberta
Cross Roberson and her husband Larry, and Emma Cross Boyd and her husband John; one
sister, Amy Cheney; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces,
nephews, other relatives, and friends; and
WHEREAS, with the death of Major Cross, Louisiana has lost one of her finest sons,
a beloved individual who was widely respected and admired for his kindness and integrity;
and
WHEREAS, although the death of Major Cross has left a tremendous void in his
community, his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who were blessed

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
death of Major Earl K. Cross, does hereby record for posterity his singular contributions and
outstanding achievements, and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the pride and
honor that this fine gentleman will forever bring to Rapides Parish and to the state of
Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the family of Major Earl K. Cross.
