COMMENDATIONS: Commends the state's libraries, librarians, and library staffers and
encourages the celebration of National Library Week, April 10-16, 2011
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Louisiana's libraries, librarians, and library staffers and to encourage the2
celebration of National Library Week, April 10 through 16, 2011.3
WHEREAS, first sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance4
sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each5
April; and6
WHEREAS, libraries provide free access to everything from books and online7
resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and8
retraining; and9
WHEREAS, today, more than ever, Louisiana's school, academic, public, and special10
libraries are making a true difference in the lives of the state's citizens; and11
WHEREAS, librarians are trained professionals, helping people of all ages and12
backgrounds find and interpret the information they need to live, learn, and work in a13
challenging economy; and14
WHEREAS, libraries help to level the playing field for job seekers, with eighty-eight15
public libraries nationwide providing access to job databases and other online resources; and16
WHEREAS, libraries are places of opportunity that provide programs teaching all17
forms of literacy, promoting continuing education, and encouraging lifelong learning; and18
WHEREAS, every day, the people of Louisiana turn to and depend on their libraries19

WHEREAS, libraries, librarians, library staffers, and library patrons across this state1
and nation are celebrating National Library Week; and2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that this special week be set aside in recognition of all3
of the wonderful resources available at Louisiana libraries.4
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the5
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Louisiana's libraries, librarians, and library6
staffers and does hereby encourage the celebration of National Library Week, April 107
through 16, 2011. 8
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted9
to the state librarian of Louisiana.10
