HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 23
BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW
A RESOLUTION
To commend Louisiana's libraries, librarians, and library staffers and to encourage the
celebration of National Library Week, April 10 through 16, 2011.
WHEREAS, first sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance
sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each
April; and
WHEREAS, libraries provide free access to everything from books and online
resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and
retraining; and
WHEREAS, today, more than ever, Louisiana's school, academic, public, and special
libraries are making a true difference in the lives of the state's citizens; and
WHEREAS, librarians are trained professionals, helping people of all ages and
backgrounds find and interpret the information they need to live, learn, and work in a
challenging economy; and
WHEREAS, libraries help to level the playing field for job seekers, with eighty-eight
public libraries nationwide providing access to job databases and other online resources; and
WHEREAS, libraries are places of opportunity that provide programs teaching all
forms of literacy, promoting continuing education, and encouraging lifelong learning; and
WHEREAS, every day, the people of Louisiana turn to and depend on their libraries
and librarians; and
WHEREAS, libraries, librarians, library staffers, and library patrons across this state
and nation are celebrating National Library Week; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that this special week be set aside in recognition of all
of the wonderful resources available at Louisiana libraries. ENROLLEDHR NO. 23

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Louisiana's libraries, librarians, and library
staffers and does hereby encourage the celebration of National Library Week, April 10
through 16, 2011.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the state librarian of Louisiana.
