CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of Warner K. Brown, assistant
professor of physics at Southern University at Shreveport
A RESOLUTION1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Warner K. Brown, assistant2
professor of physics at Southern University at Shreveport.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Warner K. Brown on5
Wednesday, February 22, 2011, at the age of fifty-one; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown attended the Grambling Laboratory schools and graduated7
from high school with honors in 1977; in 1981, he graduated with honors with a degree in8
physics from Grambling State University (GSU), where he was the recipient of numerous9
awards for his excellence in academics, and he later earned graduate hours in physics at the10
State University of New York, ultimately completing a master of arts in teaching natural11
sciences at GSU in 2000; and12
WHEREAS, for twenty-eight years, Mr. Brown was a distinguished educator at13
Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA), where he served with distinction in many14
leadership positions, including as director of the engineering technology program and of the15
summer science program and where he was a very accomplished writer of a variety of16
successful grants; and17
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was respected, admired, and beloved by the SUSLA family,18
and in 2010, he was approved by the Southern University Board of Supervisors to attain the19
rank of associate professor with tenure; and20 HR NO. 4

WHEREAS, each summer from 1999 through 2008, Mr. Brown lectured in physics1
for the Louisiana State University Medical Center at Shreveport MCAT program, and during2
the summer of 1991, he taught physics lecture courses in the Upward Bound Science3
Program at Wiley College; and4
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a member of many organizations, including the5
National Technical Association and the Louisiana Academy of Sciences, and he served as6
president of the Society of Physics Students; and7
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown also was a dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,8
Inc., and was a charter member of the Bossier City Alumni Chapter and served as Exchequer9
for the fraternity for six years; and10
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown is survived by his mother, Jean G. Brown; his brother, John11
F. Brown, Jr., and his wife, Jo Ann; his sister, Vicki R. Brown; two nephews, Travis Keith12
Brown and his wife, LaShonda, and Jonathan Benjamin Brown; his great-nephew, Jordan13
Benjamin Brown; his uncle, Aubrey Lee Collins; his aunt, Betty S. Hearns, and her husband,14
Eddie; his great-aunt, Dorothy Gilliam; his godmother, Shirley Henderson; and numerous15
other relatives, godchildren, and friends; and16
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown touched many lives and leaves a rich and unique legacy, and17
though his death has created a tremendous void in his community, his memory shall live18
forever in the minds and hearts of all who knew and loved him.19
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the20
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the21
death of Warner K. Brown, assistant professor of physics at Southern University at22
Shreveport, does hereby recognize and record for posterity his singular contributions and23
outstanding accomplishments as a scholar and educator, and does hereby extend enduring24
appreciation for the pride and honor that this wonderful gentleman will forever bring to his25
family, friends, students, colleagues, community, and state.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted27
to the family of Warner K. Brown.28 HR NO. 4
