Commends Pan-American Life Insurance Company upon its centennial celebration. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Pan-American Life Insurance Company upon its centennial celebration, "A2 Century of Promises Kept".3 WHEREAS, Crawford H. Ellis, a young New Orleans native, began his career as a4 bookkeeper with the United Fruit Company and was responsible for more than twenty-five5 ships that brought produce into the Port of New Orleans; and6 WHEREAS, Mr. Ellis, through his knowledge of the people and their culture,7 realized a need for insurance protection for both the workers and merchants of goods being8 imported and exported; and9 WHEREAS, in 1911, Mr. Ellis joined forces with Dr. Edward G. Simmons, an expert10 in life insurance, Dr. Marion Souchon, a renowned surgeon and physician, and Eugene J.11 McGiveny, a corporate lawyer, to create a life insurance company that served the needs of12 Central and South American traders, as well as those in the United States; and13 WHEREAS, as New Orleans was the busiest port in the United States at the time,14 Mr. Ellis suggested a name for the company that would reflect its dual heritage - Pan-15 American Life Insurance Company - and in March 1912, after having issued its first life16 insurance policy, was on its way to becoming an "All-of-the-Americas" company; and17 WHEREAS, Pan-American Life Insurance Company has been headquartered in New18 SR NO. 9 SLS 111ES-192 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 Orleans, Louisiana, since its inception in 1911; and1 WHEREAS, today, Pan-American Life Insurance Group is a strong, well established2 company with more than $2.2 billion dollars in total assets, employing more than eight3 hundred people worldwide, providing top-rated life and health insurance, worksite benefits4 and financial services in forty-seven states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico; and5 WHEREAS, the Group's flagship member companies offer individual and group life6 and health insurance throughout Latin America with branches and affiliates in Costa Rica,7 Columbia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Puerto Rico, and the8 Cayman Islands.9 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana10 does hereby commend Pan-American Life Insurance Company upon its milestone one11 hundredth anniversary.12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Jose13 S.
