BY REPRESENTATIVES PATRICIA SMITH, ROSALIND JONES, AND STIAES
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Tuesday, May 10, 2011, as AKA Day at the
capitol
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2011, as AKA Day at the capitol and to commend the2
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.3
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha4
Sorority, Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday,5
May 10, 2011, as AKA Day at the capitol; and 6
WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha7
Kappa Alpha Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority established by African8
American college women; and 9
WHEREAS, throughout the past one hundred three years, Alpha Kappa Alpha10
Sorority has expanded internationally to more than eight hundred fifty chapters; and 11
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-one of these chapters, which are12
located on college and university campuses and have active alumnae groups in communities13
throughout the state; and 14
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is committed to community service and15
actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's citizens; and 16
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters encourage their members to become17
involved and committed community volunteers in one of their primary service components,18

WHEREAS, state representatives Rosalind Jones, Charmaine Marchand Stiaes, and1
Patricia Smith are proud AKA alumnae; and2
WHEREAS, this year's theme is "Paving the Way for Emerging Leaders", and the3
theme of the new AKA administration is "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service";4
and5
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the capitol is a national program through which members6
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority throughout the nation meet with their legislators to address7
issues that are pertinent to their communities. 8
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby9
recognize Tuesday, May 10, 2011, as AKA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol and does10
hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha11
Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their family,12
friends, and communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.13
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted14
to the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.15
