ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2011 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 35 BY REPRESENTATIVES DANAHAY, GEYMANN, AND KLECKLEY A RESOLUTION To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Don E. Manuel of Moss Bluff. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Don E. Manuel on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at the age of seventy-nine; and WHEREAS, a native of Kinder and a resident of Moss Bluff, Mr. Manuel attended school in Kinder in his early years before moving to Lake Charles; he was a graduate of Marion High School and attended McNeese State University; and WHEREAS, Mr. Manuel served with valor in the United States Army, including two years of combat in the Korean War; he was an artillery gun sergeant and received five major battle stars and a presidential citation for his dedicated and courageous service to his country; and WHEREAS, for sixteen years, from 1984 until 1992 and then again from 2000 until 2008, Mr. Manuel represented the Moss Bluff area with great effectiveness as a widely respected and admired member of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, serving for a time as president and vice president and lending his vast expertise to many statewide committees; and WHEREAS, in addition to his distinguished public service, Mr. Manuel was a retiree of PPG and a rice farmer; and WHEREAS, an active member of his community, Mr. Manuel was involved with many organizations, and he served with distinction as president of the State Rodeo Boosters, senior vice president of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9933, Americanism chairman of VFW District 5, and a member of the Moss Bluff Civic Club, the board of the Louisiana High School Rodeo Association, the Ward One Recreation Board, the Ward One Fire Board, and the board of the Calcasieu Council on Aging; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 35 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Mr. Manuel touched the lives of countless young people through his participation with youth sports; he started Moss Bluff Buddy Ball thirteen years ago, and he also coached boys' baseball for eight years, girls' softball for four years, and football at Moss Bluff Elementary School; and WHEREAS, Mr. Manuel, who was nominated for the Angel Award for Community Service, was the deserving recipient of several honors and awards, including the Andrus Award for Community Service and Calcasieu Parish Service Award from the sheriff's office; and WHEREAS, Mr. Manuel is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Dorothy; four children, Donna Cooley and her husband Grady, David "Boo" Manuel and his wife Bonita, Sandra Richard and her husband Charlie, and Rick Manuel and his wife Lynette; one brother, Jesse Manuel and his wife Carol; fourteen grandchildren; and thirteen great- grandchildren; and WHEREAS, with the death of Mr. Manuel, Louisiana has lost one of her finest sons, a deeply beloved individual who was known for his kind and generous spirit; and WHEREAS, although the death of Mr. Manuel has left a tremendous void in his community, his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who knew and loved him. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Don E. Manuel of Moss Bluff, does hereby record for posterity his singular contributions and outstanding achievements and his long and productive service on the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the pride and honor that this fine citizen will forever bring to his family and friends, to Calcasieu Parish, to the state of Louisiana, and to the United States of America.
