MUNICIPALITIES.  Provides for the position of deputy chief of police in the city of
Jennings. (8/15/11)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 33:2541.1(B)(1), relative to the position of deputy chief of police2
for the city of Jennings; to provide for qualifications; and to provide for related3
matters.4
Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. R.S. 33:2541.1(B)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:7
ยง2541.1. Deputy chief of police; competitive appointment8

B.(1)(a) The deputy chief of police shall have not less than eight years of10
full-time law enforcement experience and shall at least hold the rank of sergeant in11
the classified police service at the time of his appointment.12
(b) Notwithstanding the provisions of Subparagraph (a) of this13
Paragraph, in the city of Jennings, the qualifications for the position of deputy14
chief of police shall be not less than ten years of full-time law enforcement15
experience of which not less than two years shall be in the classified police16
service of the Jennings Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service at the time of17 SB NO. 17

appointment as deputy chief of police.1

DIGEST
Present law allows the governing authorities in small municipalities to create the position
of deputy chief of police.
Present law mandates that any person appointed to the position of deputy chief of police
must have not less than eight years of full-time law enforcement experience and at least hold
the rank of sergeant in the classified police service at the time of his appointment.
Proposed law exempts the city of Jennings from the qualifications required of a deputy chief
of police in present law and sets forth that the qualifications for a deputy chief of police for
the city of Jennings shall be not less than ten years of full-time law enforcement experience
of which not less than two years shall be in the classified police service of the Jennings
Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service at the time of appointment as deputy chief of police.
Effective August 15, 2011.
