LOCAL OFFICIALS. Provides relative to the powers of the police chief in the town of
Pearl River. (8/15/11)
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 33:423.22, relative to the town of Pearl River; to authorize the police chief to2
take certain personnel actions with respect to police personnel; and to provide for3
related matters.4
Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 33:423.22 is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7
ยง423.22. Town of Pearl River; authority over personnel by elected chief of police8
Notwithstanding the provisions of R.S. 33:423 or any other provision of9
law to the contrary, in and for the town of Pearl River, the elected chief of police10
shall appoint, promote, discipline, and discharge police personnel subject to the11
budgetary limitations of the mayor and the board of aldermen pertaining to the12
number of allotted positions for the police department.  Any such action shall13
be taken without regard to race, creed, or color.14 SB NO. 20

Present law provides that in Lawrason Act municipalities where the chief of police is
elected, he shall have certain additional powers and duties and make recommendations to
the mayor and board of aldermen relative to the appointment of police personnel, the
promotion of officers, disciplinary action, and the dismissal of police personnel. Provides
that such recommendations shall be made regardless of race, creed, or color.
Proposed law provides that the elected chief of police in the town of Pearl River shall
appoint, promote, discipline, and discharge police personnel subject to the budgetary
limitations of the mayor and the board of aldermen. 
Effective August 15, 2011.
