SHERIFFS.  Increases the supplemental pay of sheriff's deputies. (8/15/11)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 33:2218.8(B) and (G), relative to supplemental pay for deputy2
sheriffs; to increase the amount of monthly compensation; and to provide for related3
matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 33:2218.8(B) and (G) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as6
follows: 7
ยง2218.8. Extra compensation for commissioned full-time deputy sheriffs of all8
parishes9

B. Out of the funds appropriated by the legislature for the payment of the11
extra compensation provided by Subsection A of this Section, there shall be12
distributed to the sheriff of each parish monthly to pay additional compensation for13
full-time commissioned deputy sheriffs, and for those hired after March 31, 1986,14
who have completed and passed a council-approved training program as provided15
in R.S. 40:2405 and who are paid a salary of not less than three hundred fifty dollars16
per month, the amount of five hundred one thousand dollars per month for each17 SB NO. 229

full-time commissioned deputy sheriff at the completion of one year of service.1

G. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsections A and B of this Section,3
any full-time deputy sheriff employed as a field representative or process server and4
who is paid a salary of not less than three hundred fifty dollars per month shall be5
entitled to receive extra compensation in the amount of five hundred one thousand6
dollars per month at the completion of one year of service. However, to be eligible7
for such extra compensation, a field representative or process server shall have8
completed and passed a council-approved training program as provided in R.S.9
40:2405.10

DIGEST
Present law provides state compensation for commissioned full-time deputy sheriffs of all
parishes. Provides for additional compensation for full-time commissioned deputy sheriffs,
and for those hired after March 31, 1986, who have completed and passed a POST-approved
training program and who are paid a salary of not less than $350 per month, the amount of
$500 per month.
Present law also provides that any full-time deputy sheriff employed as a field representative
or process server and who is paid a salary of not less than $350 per month shall be entitled
to receive extra compensation in the amount of $500 per month at the completion of one year
of service. However, to be eligible for such extra compensation, a field representative or
process server shall have completed and passed a POST-approved training program.
Proposed law increases the extra compensation to $1,000 per month, otherwise retains
present law.
Effective August 15, 2011.
