Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2011 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 24 BY SENATOR BROOME AND REPRESENTATI VE PATRICIA SMITH A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To express the support of the Legislature of Louisiana as the host state for the 2011 Annual Legislative Conference of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL-Women) being held in Baton Rouge on June 23-26, 2011. WHEREAS, NOBEL-Women is a non-profit, non-partisan organization primarily composed of current and former black women legislators; and WHEREAS, originally established in 1985 as a national organization to increase and promote the presence of black women in government, NOBEL-Women in recent years has expanded its vision to serve as a global voice to address a myriad of issues affecting the lives of all women; and WHEREAS, throughout its history, NOBEL-Women has inspired women to take an active role in the making of public policy and have served as a catalyst to provide economic and social justice for all classes and races of people; and WHEREAS, NOBEL-Women has worked actively to achieve its goals to increase the representation of black women in public service and the private sector by providing educational forums to address major public policy issues particularly in the areas of health, telecommunications, education, economic development and financial policies; and WHEREAS, as a viable voice for black women, NOBEL-Women acts to communicate the needs of black women to the media, legislature, and government to affect change and supports opportunities that promote career, education and employment advancements for black women; and WHEREAS, although NOBEL-Women is primarily concerned with issues facing the black community, the organization examines the human and economic needs of all people and works to ensure the enforcement of responsible programs and policies that meet the legal, social, political, economic, education, and health needs of children, women and families by keeping governmental agencies accountable for implementing equitable laws and regulations that prohibit discrimination against women and promote equity and participation in the public and private sector; and SCR NO. 24 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the theme of the 2011 Annual Legislative Conference is "Architects of Innovation: Creating a Blueprint for Legislative Success", which speaks to the opportunity that legislators have in meeting the current challenges in state government; and WHEREAS, the city of Baton Rouge provides a unique and colorful venue for attendees to the Annual Legislative Conference, including Louisiana State University, Southern University, State Capitol and Capitol Complex, Old State Capitol, Old Governor's Mansion, USS Kidd and Veteran's Memorial, Louisiana Art & Science Museum, Shaw Center for the Arts, LSU Rural Life Museum, downtown farmer's market, Louisiana State Museum, restaurants and cafes, plantation tours, leisure time on the Mississippi River levee, and numerous other venues; and WHEREAS, the legislature applauds those members who have been successful in having Louisiana being selected as the host state for the 2011 Annual Legislative Conference and commits to providing such support as necessary to fulfill its role and responsibilities in hosting the conference. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana hereby acknowledges that Louisiana is the host state for the 2011 NOBEL-Women Annual Legislative Conference and as the host state, the Louisiana Legislature hereby expresses full support for and commitment to the conference to be held in Baton Rouge on June 23-26, 2011.
