Commends the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana and congratulates Taylor Oliver on her selection as a Champion by the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana and to congratulate2 Taylor Oliver on her selection as a Champion by the Children's Miracle Network3 Hospitals.4 WHEREAS, this year's telecast marks the twenty-fourth annual telethon for the5 Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana; and6 WHEREAS, its parent charity, Children's Miracle Network (CMN), has contributed7 more than $3.4 billion to fund medical care, research, and health outreach initiatives that8 have helped to improve the lives of thousands of pediatric patients since its founding in9 1983; and10 WHEREAS, CMN collaborates with individuals, organizations, and media partners11 to fund medical technology upgrades and health education opportunities that benefit its12 member hospitals and foundations and raises funds for one hundred seventy children's13 hospitals across North America; and14 WHEREAS, Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana provided financial15 support to its community partners, such as CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital of Lake Charles,16 Louisiana, a premier pediatric health services provider; and17 WHEREAS, CMN was instrumental in the implementation of an advanced ear, nose,18 SCR NO. 50 SLS 11RS-1489 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 and throat navigational surgery system at St. Patrick Hospital used in the treatment of1 pediatric sinus patients that improves surgical outcomes and reduces recovery time; and2 WHEREAS, it is the mission of CMN that every child deserves the hope and healing3 available from a hospital in his community, care that contributes to the child's overall health4 and well being; and5 WHEREAS, through CMN children of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances can6 receive medical treatment for every imaginable disease and injury; and7 WHEREAS, it was announced on May 11, 2011, that ten year old Taylor Oliver of8 Lake Charles, a former CMN Miracle Kid, was selected as the Champion to represent9 Louisiana in the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Champion Program; and10 WHEREAS, at just fifteen months old, Taylor was given a diagnosis of phase 411 neuroblastoma and spent three months in the hospital undergoing chemotherapy; and12 WHEREAS, despite extensive treatment, her family received the devastating news13 that the chemotherapy was not successful and the doctors did not expected Taylor to live to14 see her second birthday; and15 WHEREAS, even though she is considered legally blind, Taylor walks, runs, plays16 softball, soccer, basketball and has dreams of becoming a chef and owning a restaurant; and17 WHEREAS, despite the fact that she still lives with disfiguring tumors, which have18 threatened her life on more than one occasion, Taylor is now cancer free and will turn eleven19 years old September 5, 2011; and20 WHEREAS, CMN also provides much needed grants to other worthwhile community21 organizations, such as CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital Speech and Hearing Department, the22 Automated External Defibrillators Program with the Calcasieu Parish School Board and the23 Diocese of Lake Charles, St. Nicholas Center for Early Intervention, the Nurturing Parent24 Program at Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana, and Kid Power of Southwest Louisiana; and25 WHEREAS, Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana provides the much26 needed infrastructure for grassroots community fund-raising efforts through its corporate27 events, radio and television broadcasts and other local happenings that generate donations28 to local providers of life-saving care and crucial services for children.29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby30 SCR NO. 50 SLS 11RS-1489 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 commend the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana for its many contributions1 to local pediatric health services.2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does3 hereby congratulate Taylor Oliver on her selection as a Champion by the Children's Miracle4 Network Hospitals.5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to6 Taylor Oliver and to the Children's Miracle Network of Southwest Louisiana.7 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Bobbie Hunter.
