Designates June 9, 2011, as University of New Orleans Day at the legislature. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To designate Thursday, June 9, 2011, as University of New Orleans Day at the Louisiana2 Legislature and to commend the university for its significant and lasting3 contributions to the state of Louisiana.4 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans opened its doors on September 6, 1958,5 as the first fully integrated public university in the southeastern United States; and6 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has a one billion dollar economic impact7 on the state of Louisiana; and8 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has educated seventy-five thousand9 alumni from all sixty-four Louisiana parishes, all fifty states, and more than one hundred10 nations; and11 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has been ranked by U.S. News & World12 Report as one of the nation's top twenty most popular universities and as having the highest13 ethnic diversity index among Louisiana's universities; and14 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has extended its professional reach and15 academic influence nationally and internationally with high quality academic programs in16 Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and17 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has developed numerous award-winning18 SCR NO. 72 SLS 11RS-1943 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 academic programs of national distinction, including accounting, chemistry, creative writing,1 film and video, jazz studies, naval architecture, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism2 administration; and3 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans faculty has achieved the highest level4 of researcher productivity in Louisiana; and5 WHEREAS, as Louisiana's major urban university, the University of New Orleans6 has been a critical asset in the post-Katrina recovery of the New Orleans area; and7 WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans' students, faculty, and alumni have8 launched active and effective initiatives in support of the university's academic and9 community objectives; and10 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in honor of the University of11 New Orleans.12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby13 recognize Thursday, June 9, 2011, as University of New Orleans Day at the Legislature of14 Louisiana and does hereby commend the university for its significant and lasting15 contributions to the state of Louisiana.16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.17 Joe M.
