SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 9

CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences upon the death of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant
Quadi S. Hudgins, while on his third tour of duty.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of United2
States Army Staff Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins.3
WHEREAS, it with great sadness that the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the4
death of Staff Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins, age 26, on April 2, 2011, while serving in his third5
tour of duty; and6
WHEREAS, Quadi S. Hudgins moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, from Pensacola,7
Florida, after the second grade, when his father, then in the United States Army, was8
transferred; and 9
WHEREAS, he was raised by his grandfather, Charles Hudgins, and graduated from10
Sarah Towles Reed High School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2003; and11
WHEREAS, in June 2003, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Army in12
service and support of this country and was trained to repair radio and communications13
equipment; and14
WHEREAS, Sergeant Hudgins was a decorated soldier as well as a boxer, taking up15
the sport after an uncle told him, "if you're was going to fight, you might as well do it in the16
ring"; and17
WHEREAS, between 2004 to 2005, Quadi S. Hudgins served in Korea at Fort Camp18 SCR NO. 9

Humphreys, where he won numerous boxing awards; and1
WHEREAS, in September 6, 2007, Quadi S. Hudgins married Ashley Hudgins in2
Kentucky, while they were both stationed at Fort Campbell; and3
WHEREAS, Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins, returned home to meet his three month old4
daughter, Nyima Hudgins, who was born in March 2008 and, in July 2008, the family5
relocated to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas; and6
WHEREAS, in December 2008, Quadi S. Hudgins, achieved rank of Sergeant for the7
Combat Support Battalion platoon, Regimental Support Squadron, and 3rd Armored Cavalry8
Regiment; and9
WHEREAS, in September 2009, he was named boxing champion at Fort Hood with10
the fastest knockout time in the first round and placed third in the 165-pound weight division11
in the All-Army Boxing Tournament at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, posting 15 wins against12
three losses; and13
WHEREAS, in 2010, Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins won the boxing match for Ring14
Side Boxing Championship and his goal was to win his weight division during the Army15
trial camp and compete in the Armed Forces Championship, however he was unable to16
participate; and17
WHEREAS, at age 25, Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins worked hard to prepare for his18
trial camp and All-Army boxing challenges declaring, "I do low-weight/high reps to get19
stronger. I got my stamina up so there will be no getting tired. I have good KO power and20
I'm ready!"; and21
WHEREAS, in June 2010, he was assigned to the Regimental Support Battalion,22
which provides troops with logistical support, for the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment and23
four months later was deployed to Iraq with the mission of helping train Iraqi police and24
military forces; and25
WHEREAS, Quadi S. Hudgins was based at Contingency Operating Site Kalsu in26
Iskandariya, about twenty miles south of Baghdad; and27
WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 2, 2011, Sergeant Hudgins, along with fellow28
warrior, Sergeant Christian Garcia of Goodyear, Arizona, died when enemy forces attacked29
their position with indirect fire in Babil, a province between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers30 SCR NO. 9

south of Baghdad; and1
WHEREAS, his awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals,2
two Army Achievement Medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, two Army Good Conduct3
Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign4
Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service5
Ribbons, Air Assault Badge, and Basic Marksman Qualification Badge; and6
WHEREAS, he made the ultimate sacrifice in an effort to change the world we live7
in and was posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant; and8
 WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins was an esteemed father to Nyima9
Hudgins and wife, Ashley, and was devoted to actively assisting his family fulfill its goals.10
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana, does hereby11
extend its deepest and most profound condolences to the family of Louisiana Army Staff12
Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins for their immeasurable loss and his great sacrifice as he faithfully13
served his community, state, and nation, and will be forever remembered by those who knew14
and loved him as a true American hero.15
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the16
family of Staff Sergeant Quadi S. Hudgins.17
