SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 101
BY SENATOR RISER 
SENATE.  Declares June 15, 2011, "Asthma Awareness Day" at the Louisiana Senate.
A RESOLUTION1
To declare Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as "Asthma Awareness Day" at the Louisiana Senate.2
WHEREAS, more than twenty-four million Americans suffer from asthma, costing3
the United States economy over twenty billion dollars in health care costs and lost4
productivity annually; and5
WHEREAS, nearly ten people die of asthma each day in the United States; and6
WHEREAS, over seven million of these Americans are children under the age of7
eighteen, making asthma the most common chronic illness of childhood in the United States;8
and9
WHEREAS, asthma is one of the leading causes of childhood hospitalizations and10
long-term illnesses, accounting for over ten million school days lost each school year; and11
WHEREAS, asthma accounts for over fourteen million missed work days annually12
in the United States; and13
WHEREAS, the American people should be informed of the significant14
consequences of asthma and allergic diseases that can be prevented by the initiation of15
appropriate medical care; and16
WHEREAS, the National Institute of Health has issued guidelines for the diagnosis17
and management of asthma which provide proven methods for prevention and treatment of18 SR NO. 101

asthma; and1
WHEREAS, with greater public awareness of the symptoms, consequences, and2
treatments of asthma, the quality of life for both children and adults living with asthma in3
the United States can be greatly improved.4
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana5
does hereby declare Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as "Asthma Awareness Day".6
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to7
Nancy Sander of the Allergy and Asthma Network Mothers of Asthmatics, Kevin Cantrelle8
of AstraZeneca PLC, Keith Parker of TEVA Pharmaceutical Industries, and to Baton Rouge9
allergists Drs. Prem and Vimla Menon.10
