SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 102

COMMENDATIONS. Commends James "Buster" Couhig on winning third place in the
Ninth Environmental Awareness Art and Language Arts Contest.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend James "Buster" Couhig, student at Bains Elementary School in West Feliciana2
Parish, upon his winning third place in the Ninth Environmental Awareness Art and3
Language Arts Contest, in language arts for students ages five to seven from4
throughout Louisiana.5
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission, under the6
direction of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, has chosen the winners in7
its ninth annual contest for Louisiana children in grades kindergarten through high school;8
and9
WHEREAS, the contest is designed to encourage an emphasis on and the inclusion10
of environmental science content in Louisiana's classrooms; and11
WHEREAS, this year's theme of "Louisiana Outdoors: A Beautiful Experience"12
attracted over thirteen hundred entries from students throughout Louisiana; and13
WHEREAS, the theme was selected in order to assist teachers in using the contest14
to encourage students to be aware of and to enjoy the outdoors, leading them to become15
better stewards of the environment in the future; and16
WHEREAS, student entries include artwork, poetry, and short stories which allow17
the students to creatively reflect upon their love, appreciation, and knowledge of the unique18 SR NO. 102

natural habitats that Louisiana offers its citizens; and1
WHEREAS, the winners receive monetary awards, provided through the generous2
sponsorship of the Alcoa Foundation, and the winning art work is placed on billboards in the3
students' communities and the poetry and short stories are featured in newspaper4
advertisements. 5
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana6
does hereby commend James "Buster" Couhig of Bains Elementary School for winning third7
place in the Ninth Environmental Awareness Art and Language Arts Contest, in language8
arts for students ages five to seven. 9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to10
James "Buster" Couhig, through the West Feliciana Parish School Board, Bains Elementary11
School.12
