Requests the Department of Health and Hospitals, the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, and the Louisiana State Board of Pharmacy to study certain aspects of the administration of certain immunizations. A RESOLUTION1 To urge and request the Department of Health and Hospitals, the Louisiana State Board of2 Medical Examiners, and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy to jointly study certain3 aspects of the administration of immunizations and to jointly present their findings4 to the Senate and House committees on health and welfare.5 WHEREAS, it is of the utmost importance to the citizens of Louisiana that access6 to care is maximized to the greatest degree possible while still ensuring the highest degree7 of quality and competence from health care providers; and8 WHEREAS, the administration of immunizations is one area where it is beneficial9 for further study so that the Senate and House committees on health and welfare can make10 sound recommendations and decisions as to whether an expanded array of health care11 providers should be allowed to administer immunizations in this state.12 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana13 does hereby urge and request the Department of Health and Hospitals, the Louisiana State14 Board of Medical Examiners, and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy to study certain aspects15 of the administration of immunizations and to jointly present their findings to the Senate and16 House committees on health and welfare.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the study shall include, but not be limited to, the18 SR NO. 122 SLS 11RS-2625 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 following:1 (1) The scope and rate of CDC-recommended immunizations proactively2 administered by all health care providers, including specially trained pharmacists, in3 Louisiana. This shall be identified by provider type and by health care setting.4 (2) A comprehensive list of allowable CDC-recommended immunizations5 administered in other states by various provider types.6 (3) A comparison of immunization rates where pharmacists are able to administer7 such immunizations, comparing rates when a physician's prescription is required and where8 the same immunization may be administered under CDC protocol.9 (4) A comprehensive review of accessibility issues in obtaining immunizations in10 various health care settings.11 (5) A comprehensive review of the training which is available and its adequacy for12 non-physician immunizers.13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Health and Hospitals, the14 Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy study15 certain aspects of the administration of immunizations and jointly present their findings to16 the Senate and House committees on health and welfare no later than February 1, 2012.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the18 secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals, the Louisiana State Board of Medical19 Examiners, and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.20 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Greg Waddell.
