Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2011 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 158 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH A RESOLUTION To commend West Monroe High School Football Coach Don Shows upon his induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, Don Shows was reared in Ruston in Lincoln Parish where he graduated in 1958 from Ruston High School, winning four state championships in track, and lettering in baseball and football; and WHEREAS, Don Shows graduated from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston in 1963, receiving a teacher certification in science and physical education before starting his legendary coaching career; and WHEREAS, Don Shows coached football at Jonesboro-Hodge High School, taking the Tigers to the 1977 state championship, playing the title game in the old Tulane University Stadium in New Orleans, the last game ever played there; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows also coached at Farmerville in Union Parish and Pineville High School in Rapides Parish before going back to college at Northeast Louisiana State University and coaching the linebackers for the Indians; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows then brought his extraordinary coaching talents to Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, helping the Demons on to a conference championship in the 1988 season; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows began his incredible reign at West Monroe High School in 1989, pulling a Rebel team that couldn't win out of the district cellar and turning it into a powerhouse that would go undefeated in district for the first time; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows would ultimately lead West Monroe High School to seven state championships in football, compiling a 252-40 record and playing in the title game six additional times; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows' 321 victories over an overall thirty five-year career rates No. 3 in Louisiana prep football history, and he has been honored twenty-one times as district coach of the year and multiple times as the state football coach of the year; and SR NO. 158 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, in January 2010, Coach Shows was again honored when he received the A.O. Evans Award for community service from the West Monroe-West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Coach Shows' Rebels will enter the 2011 season with a streak of fifteen consecutive years of double-digit victories and, fittingly, on twelve occasions, there have been no fewer than twelve wins; and WHEREAS, coaching young football players has been a major part of Coach Shows life, he is most proud of his family and the support he receives from his wife, Dawn, and his children, Stephanie, Kim, Casey, and Haley. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend its highest commendations to West Monroe Football Head Coach Don Shows for his remarkable career in athletics and for his 2011 nomination and induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Coach Don Shows and to West Monroe High School. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
