Commends the service and contributions of the Links, Incorporated and recognizes Wednesday, June 8, 2011, as Louisiana Links Day at the State Capitol. A RESOLUTION1 To commend the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated and to recognize2 Wednesday, June 8, 2011, as Louisiana Links Day at the State Capitol.3 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated organization, founded by two Philadelphia4 matrons, Margaret Hawkins and Sarah Scott on November 9, 1946 and incorporated in 1951,5 is an international not-for-profit corporation consisting of 12,000 professional women of6 color in 270 chapters located in forty-two states, the District of Columbia, the7 Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Germany, and South Africa which is dedicated to8 enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans9 and other persons of African ancestry; and10 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated has eight chapters located in Louisiana: the11 Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans,12 Pontchartrain and Shreveport chapters; and13 WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated identifies and addresses concerns, through14 financial contributions and as public service volunteers, involving a multitude of issues:15 child literacy, after-school programs, college readiness, scholarship, and mentoring; drug and16 HIV/AIDS awareness and health and wellness awareness; partnering with local museums,17 symphonies, art councils, educational institutions, and corporations to support art programs18 SR NO. 79 SLS 11RS-1981 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 and presentations by artists of color; addressing economic and social inequalities; and1 developing public policy leadership skills; and2 WHEREAS, in 2006, members of Louisiana Links chapters began visiting the3 Louisiana Legislature to support legislation and policies seeking to provide the infrastructure4 and funding necessary to implement "Healthy People 2010"; to close the gap in poverty and5 education; to provide adequate and affordable health care to all citizens; to bring people6 home after Hurricane Katrina; to revitalize the New Orleans public school system; to7 guarantee displaced voters their constitutional right to vote; to reduce child obesity in8 Louisiana; and many other initiatives seeking to better the quality of life for citizens in our9 state; and10 WHEREAS, today on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, members of Louisiana Links11 chapters visit the legislature to voice their concern and continued support of such programs12 seeking to enrich, sustain, and ensure the cultural and economic survival of African13 Americans and persons of African ancestry.14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana15 does hereby commend the service and contributions of The Links, Incorporated and does16 hereby recognize Wednesday, June 8, 2011, as Louisiana Links Day at the State Capitol.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to The18 Links, Incorporated.19 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Jerry J.
