SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 88

COMMENDATIONS. Commends Senator B. L. "Buddy" Shaw for years of distinguished
public service.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Honorable B. L. "Buddy" Shaw for his leadership during many years of2
service in the Legislature of Louisiana and to recognize his many significant3
achievements and contributions to the legislative institution, his country, his district,4
and the people of the state of Louisiana.5
WHEREAS, after representing Senate District 37 and House District 6, Senator6
Buddy Shaw will retire from the Senate when the term officially ends in January 2012; and7
WHEREAS, after graduating from Jamestown High School, he served in the United8
States Army and received a bachelors and masters degree from Northwestern State9
University, after which he continued his studies at Louisiana State University and obtained10
a Doctor of Education; and11
WHEREAS, Buddy Shaw has had a lengthy and distinguished career as an educator,12
first as a teacher at Hamilton Parish Junior High School, then as Assistant Principal at13
Lakeshore and Youree Drive Junior High School, Principal at C.E. Byrd High School from14
1970 to 1986, and Superintendent for Vocational Education for the Caddo Parish School15
System; and16
WHEREAS, he began his career in public service as a member of the Caddo Parish17
School Board, where he served from 1987 to 1994, including as President in 1993; and18 SR NO. 88

WHEREAS, Buddy Shaw began his distinguished service in the Louisiana1
Legislature when he was elected to serve the people of District 6 in the House of2
Representatives, where he served for two terms from 1996 until 2004; and3
WHEREAS, he returned to the legislature in 2008, when he was chosen to serve the4
people of District 37 in the Senate, where he has been determined to help Louisiana work5
toward changing its image through statesmanship rather than political expediency; and6
WHEREAS, Senator Shaw has worked diligently to reform Louisiana's tax code,7
including the repeal of the Stelly Tax, and has been committed to ethics reform, fiscal8
discipline, and economic development, including the Air Force Cyber Command Center, the9
completion of the I-49 corridor, and an additional span to the Jimmy Davis Bridge; and10
WHEREAS, he currently serves on the Revenue and Fiscal Affairs and11
Transportation committees, and is Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Environmental12
Quality; and13
WHEREAS, although public service and civic activities have kept Senator Shaw14
busy, he has always ensured that his family comes first, especially his loving and supportive15
wife, Mary Ann; and16
WHEREAS, always representing the balance and the best interests of the people in17
his district, Buddy Shaw has been considered a fair-minded, trusted legislator and it is18
appropriate that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana recognize his numerous19
accomplishments as his term of legislative service concludes.20
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana,21
and the friends and colleagues of Senator B. L. "Buddy" Shaw do hereby honor and22
commend him for his leadership during many years of distinguished service in the23
Legislature of Louisiana and recognize his many significant achievements and contributions24
to the legislative institution, his country, his legislative district, and the people of the state25
of Louisiana.26
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the27
Honorable B.L. "Buddy" Shaw, State Senator, District 37.28 SR NO. 88
