SLS 11RS-534 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 4 Regular Session, 2011 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 90 BY SENATOR CHAISSON COMMENDATIONS . Commends Senator Willie L. Mount on years of distinguished public service. A RESOLUTION1 To commend the Honorable Willie L. Mount and to express enduring gratitude for her2 outstanding contributions to the City of Lake Charles, the parish of Calcasieu, and3 the state of Louisiana, particularly during her tenure as a distinguished member of4 the Louisiana Senate.5 WHEREAS, Senator Willie Landry Mount is the true epitome of a statesman, a6 public servant whose leadership as a state senator has merited her election to three7 consecutive terms beginning in 2000, during which time she has utilized every opportunity8 to serve the citizens of her district and the state in an honorable and dedicated manner; and9 WHEREAS, Willie Mount is a lifelong resident of Lake Charles and is a proud10 graduate of Lake Charles High School and McNeese State University where she received11 a bachelor of science degree in business administration; and12 WHEREAS, after graduation from college, Willie Mount became a licensed real13 estate agent and also started a small business; and14 WHEREAS, after spending several years building a successful business, Willie15 Mount felt a higher calling to give back to the community that she loves so dearly and16 embarked upon a path of public service; and17 WHEREAS, in 1993, Willie Mount made the decision to seek the office of mayor18 SR NO. 90 SLS 11RS-534 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 4 and was ultimately elected the first female mayor of the city of Lake Charles, a position she1 held for the next six years; and 2 WHEREAS, during her term as mayor, Willie Mount was instrumental in raising the3 pay for police, firefighters, and other city employees, in restoring the Central School Arts4 and Humanities Center and the 1911 City Hall, in upgrading the parks and recreation5 facilities throughout the city, in developing the lakefront with the addition of a boardwalk,6 fishing piers, and an interactive fountain, and, most importantly, promoting a positive7 attitude about the city of Lake Charles coining the slogan "Lake Charles...Moving Forward8 Together"; and 9 WHEREAS, in 1999, Willie Mount decided she could do even more for her10 community and entered the election for District 27 State Senate; and11 WHEREAS, again she found success, enjoying a landslide primary victory and12 becoming the first female senator to represent Calcasieu Parish; and13 WHEREAS, Senator Mount was reelected for two additional terms without14 opposition and during her tenure in the Louisiana Senate she has consistently been one of15 the strongest pro-consumer forces; and16 WHEREAS, concerned with the triumph of reason and justice, she has always taken17 a special interest in the healthcare and social issues which directly affect so many of the18 constituents in her district and the state; and19 WHEREAS, Senator Mount has served with the highest degree of professionalism20 and diligence as the chairwoman of the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs and Health and21 Welfare committees and as a member of the following Senate standing committees:22 Transportation, Highways, and Public Works, Judiciary B, and Judiciary C; the following23 Senate Select Committees: Committee on Women and Children, Committee on Coastal24 Restoration & Flood Control, Committee on Consumer Affairs and Technology. State25 Technology Advisory Group, the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget, the Legislative26 Audit Advisory Council, and the Millennium Port Commission; and27 WHEREAS, Senator Mount has a tireless devotion to helping those who cannot28 always help themselves and strives to help find solutions to the problems of not only her29 constituents but of all the citizens that call the great state of Louisiana their home; and30 SR NO. 90 SLS 11RS-534 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 4 WHEREAS, Senator Mount's professional, civic, religious, and business affiliations1 have included memberships in the Louisiana Conference of Mayors, where she held the2 position of president, the Louisiana Municipal Association, Council for a Better Louisiana,3 McNeese State University Foundation Board, the Christus St. Patrick Board of Counselors4 and the Alzheimer's Association State Board, the United Way Community Foundation,5 Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana Board and the United Methodist Foundation; and6 WHEREAS, although public service and civic activities have kept Senator Mount7 busy, she has always ensured that God and her family come first; and8 WHEREAS, she is a loving wife to her husband Benjamin Mount and loves nothing9 more than simply spending time with her mother Willie McCullor Landry, her three siblings10 Sandy, Richard, and Marsha and her many nieces and nephews; and11 WHEREAS, as she prepares to begin the next exciting and productive chapter of her12 life, Senator Mount merits a substantial amount of commendation for the contributions and13 the exemplary accomplishments she has made for the state of Louisiana as a member of the14 Louisiana Senate; and15 WHEREAS, Senator Mount is the kind of person who represents the best of16 Louisiana, a woman of wisdom who uses her talents, integrity, and passion to change her17 community and state for the better.18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana19 does hereby commend and extend honor and recognition to the Honorable Willie L. Mount20 for her outstanding accomplishments, particularly during her tenure as a member of the21 Louisiana Senate, which has been marked by her uncompromising endeavor to improve the22 welfare of the constituents in her district and the citizens of Louisiana, and hereby pays23 tribute to her for the generous and effective way in which she has dedicated her time,24 intelligence and tireless energy to the service of her family, friends, community, and state.25 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does26 hereby express enduring gratitude to Senator Mount for her service to the citizens of27 Louisiana, as evidenced by her superlative achievements as a member of this distinguished28 body, and hereby extends to her the best wishes of all of her colleagues for continued29 prosperity and success in all of her future endeavors.30 SR NO. 90 SLS 11RS-534 ORIGINAL Page 4 of 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the1 Honorable Willie L.
