SLS 11RS-531 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 4 Regular Session, 2011 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 92 BY SENATOR CHAISSON COMMENDATIONS. Commends Robert "Rob" Marionneaux, Jr., on years of distinguished public service. A RESOLUTION1 To honor and commend the Honorable Robert "Rob" M. Marionneaux, Jr., for his dedicated2 service and outstanding contributions to the citizens of the parishes of Iberville,3 Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West4 Feliciana, and St. Helena, and to the state of Louisiana during his sixteen years of5 noble leadership in the Louisiana Legislature, and to express eternal gratitude for6 making Louisiana a better place for all citizens of this state.7 WHEREAS, Robert M. Marionneaux, Jr., a native son and lifelong resident of8 Louisiana, was born on October 7, 1968, in Baton Rouge, to Patricia Smith Marionneaux and9 the late Robert M. Marionneaux, Sr., and grew up on a small rural farm in Maringouin; and10 WHEREAS, Rob graduated from Catholic High of Pointe Coupee, and went on to11 attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he received his Bachelor of12 Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and a minor in psychology and sociology, and was a13 member of Sigma Nu fraternity; and14 WHEREAS, being interested in government and serving people, Rob ran for and was15 elected to serve as the Criminal Justice Representative on the General College Student16 Council, and thereafter was elected president of LSU's largest college, The General College;17 and18 SR NO. 92 SLS 11RS-531 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 4 WHEREAS, in 1995, Rob graduated from Southern University Law Center, where1 he was on the Dean's List, and represented the Law Center in various capacities, including2 being elected Vice President, the first Caucasian student representative at Southern, and3 participating in trial competition where he and his teammates won Best Brief and Best Oral4 Argument; and 5 WHEREAS, in May 1995, Rob married Keely Williams, and on their honeymoon,6 Keely recalls Rob telling her, "I think I'm going to run for office"; and7 WHEREAS, Keely smiles while remembering them campaigning and walking door-8 to-door, and how Rob wore out the soles of his cowboy boots, and how she will never forget9 making homemade signs and T-shirts with his family; sisters Janet and Julie, his mom, his10 niece, Janie, and nephews Chuck and Mark, in Rob's first campaign headquarters, the living11 room; and12 WHEREAS, at the age of twenty seven, Robert M. Marionneaux, Jr., was elected as13 the State Representative for District 18 in 1996, representing parts of Iberville, Pointe14 Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana parishes, and was appointed to serve on the15 administration of criminal justice; transportation, highways, and public works; and16 agriculture committees; and17 WHEREAS, during his first term in office, on April 26, 1998, Representative18 Marionneaux and his wife, were blessed with a son, Robert, their pride and joy; and19 WHEREAS, Robert, now 13 years old, has fond memories of growing up at the20 capitol, sitting in his dad's desk on the Senate floor watching him debate issues and pass21 laws, while also coaching his baseball team and supporting him at all of his schooling and22 sporting events, and taking him flying in his plane, and on hunting, fishing, skiing, and beach23 trips; and24 WHEREAS, after serving one term in the House of Representatives, Rob was elected25 in November 2000 to serve as the State Senator for District 17, representing all or parts of26 East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, and West Baton27 Rouge parishes, and was appointed to serve on the agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, and28 rural development; and the joint capital outlay committees; and29 WHEREAS, Senator Marionneaux was reelected in 2004, and was appointed30 SR NO. 92 SLS 11RS-531 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 4 Chairman of the Judiciary B Committee, and to serve on the governmental affairs, the select1 committee on consumer protection, and revenue and fiscal affairs committees; and2 WHEREAS, having a special interest and deep appreciation for the military, Senator3 Marionneaux started the Senate Annual Military Family Day in 2005 to honor and officially4 recognize Louisiana's fallen soldiers and their families during a legislative session for the5 ultimate sacrifice made by them in defense of our freedoms, a program which has honored6 167 fallen military heroes and their families; and7 WHEREAS, his love of all people truly shined in 2005, when after Hurricane Katrina8 destroyed New Orleans and forever changed the history of Louisiana, Senator Marionneaux9 was on the ground shortly after helping fellow Louisianians who lost everything in the10 storm, bringing 18-wheeler trucks loaded with supplies to needy people, and coordinating11 a water-borne relief effort for the people of St. Bernard Parish who were completely12 devastated, and he visited each shelter in his district and met, comforted, and assisted the13 people in need; and14 WHEREAS, Senator Marionneaux is also focused on improving the health of all15 Louisiana citizens, and authored the Louisiana Smokefree Air Act, which became law on16 January 1, 2007, and prohibits smoking in public places, including restaurants, schools,17 school buses, school campuses, public buildings, and places of employment; and18 WHEREAS, Senator Marionneaux was chosen by the Louisiana Public Health19 Association as the recipient of the Public Service Award in 2007 for his profound20 contribution to public health; and21 WHEREAS, he was reelected to his third term of office in 2008, and was appointed22 as the Chairman of the Senate Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Committee, Senate23 Parliamentarian, and member of the Senate and governmental affairs, labor and industrial24 relations, judiciary A, joint capital outlay, and joint budget committees; and25 WHEREAS, Senator Marionneaux is a public servant whose proven leadership,26 dedication, knowledge, and excellence as a state legislator has merited him consistent27 reelection to office since 1996; and28 WHEREAS, Senator Marionneaux must relinquish his Senate seat when his term of29 office officially ends in January 2012, due to term limits, but he will never stop fighting for30 SR NO. 92 SLS 11RS-531 ORIGINAL Page 4 of 4 the citizens of Louisiana.1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana2 does hereby commend and congratulate the Honorable Robert "Rob" M. Marionneaux, Jr.;3 extend honor and recognition to him for his outstanding accomplishments, particularly4 during his tenure as a member of the Louisiana Senate and the Louisiana House of5 Representatives, which has been marked by his uncompromising endeavors taken on by him6 to improve the health and welfare of his constituents and all citizens of this state; and pay7 tribute to him for the generous and effective way in which he has made a difference, and8 shared his intelligence and energy to serve his family, friends, community, and state.9 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that enduring gratitude is hereby expressed to10 Senator Marionneaux for his service to Louisiana citizens, exemplary achievements, and11 unforgettable moments as a member of this distinguished body, and hereby extends to him12 the best wishes of all of his colleagues for continued prosperity and success in his future13 endeavors.14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the15 Honorable Robert "Rob" M.
