Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2011 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 93 BY SENATORS CHAISSON, ADLEY, ALARIO, AMEDEE, APPEL, BROOME, CHABERT, CHEEK, CLAITOR, CROWE, DONAHUE, DORSEY, ERDEY, GAUTREAUX, GUILLORY, HEITMEIER, JACKSON, KOSTELKA, LAFLEUR, LONG, MARIONNEAUX, MARTI NY, MCPHERSON, MILLS, MORRELL, MORRISH, MOUNT, MURRAY, NEVERS, PERRY, PETERSON, QUINN, RISER, SHAW, SMITH, THOMPSON, WALSWORTH AND WILLARD-LEWIS A RESOLUTION To commend the Honorable Mike Michot, State Senator for the parish of Lafayette, for his many outstanding contributions to the betterment of the state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, Mike Michot has rendered exemplary service to his constituency during his sixteen-year tenure as an elected member of both houses of the Louisiana Legislature, providing faithful representation for House of Representatives District 43 when first elected in 1995; four years later winning election to the Senate District 23 seat; and having served this body with prestige for twelve years; and WHEREAS, public service is an inherent trait of the Michot family passed down from father to son; his dad, retired businessman Louis Michot, Jr., was a political activist who held several elected offices as state representative and as state superintendent of education; and WHEREAS, Michael John Michot was born on December 12, 1963, to parents, Louis and Pat Smith Michot, and reared in a exuberant household of eight brothers and sisters filled with the influences of politics and Acadiana culture; and WHEREAS, after Mike Michot graduated from Cathedral-Carmel High School, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from University of Southwestern Louisiana, now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he pledged Sigma Nu fraternity and served as president of the local chapter; and WHEREAS, after graduation, he became an active participant in the family business, Louis Michot and Associates, Inc., and later branched out with his own corporate acquisitions comprised of Premier Medical Equipment and real estate developments; and WHEREAS, in 1994, he helped to co-found Citizens for Accountable Government, a public opinion group that promotes the importance of accountability and transparency in all governmental transactions; and SR NO. 93 ENROLLED Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, in 1995, with the encouragement of family and friends, Mike Michot succeeded in capturing the House of Representatives seat by a landslide election with sixty- nine percent of the vote; and WHEREAS, during his singular term in the House, Mike Michot garnered house committee assignments to commerce, to labor and industrial relations, and to natural resources, and penned legislation to address the issues of commercial regulations, the environment, and unemployment compensation; and WHEREAS, upon his subsequent election to the upper chamber, Senator Michot was keen to bring his business insight and corporate background to full measure with service on the standing committees of finance as its chairman, commerce, consumer protection, and international affairs as its vice chairman, revenue and fiscal affairs, judiciary A, and natural resources; and WHEREAS, Senator Michot also attended to the functions of select committees for coastal restoration and flood control, the Senate Executive Committee, and as chairman of the Select Committee on Consumer Affairs and Technology; and WHEREAS, Senator Michot oversaw the state's fiscal and budgetary matters with resourceful aplomb as both chairman and vice chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget and as a member of the Joint Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay; and WHEREAS, his participation in the Commission on Streamlining Government focused on confecting legislation that addressed the critical issue of merging applied electronic technologies into governmental functions to provide improved efficiency and performance in the delivery of state services; and WHEREAS, while in the legislature, Mike Michot was a skilled supporter of economic development, protection of fragile wetlands, budgetary controls, accountability, data processing improvements, and equitable taxation; and WHEREAS, Senator Michot has been the recipient of numerous accolades in recognition of his legislative service and was especially honored to receive "Legis-Gator of the Year" award for 2010 from the Southwest Louisiana Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, many civic and nonprofit agencies have benefitted from his expertise and active participation which include the Broussard Industrial Development Board, the SR NO. 93 ENROLLED Page 3 of 3 Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, Acadiana Handicap Services, the Cathedral- Carmel Foundation, the Kiwanis Club, the Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana, the American Heart Association, and the United Way; and WHEREAS, although the demands of public life and civic duty keep him quite busy, be assured that his family is always his first concern, with his wife of twenty-two years, Monique Broussard Michot, and their two precious children, Michael, Jr., and Mary Carolyn; and WHEREAS, always the doting father, Mike makes every effort to be home in the evenings for dinner and attendance at school activities, even during hectic legislative sessions; and WHEREAS, Senator Mike Michot is a public figure of the highest caliber whose service as a state representative and state senator has merited his consistent reelection to office, and during which time, he has conscientiously confronted those challenges affecting the citizens of his district and the state of Louisiana; and WHEREAS, as Senator Michot prepares to return to the private sector, he deserves heartfelt commendation for those extraordinary strides he has taken to improve the function of state government while serving as an exceptional member of the Louisiana Legislature. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Senator Michael J. "Mike" Michot on his years of dedicated public service to this body and the state of Louisiana. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby wish for Senator Mike Michot every success in his future endeavors. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Senator Mike Michot. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
