SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 99
BY SENATOR THOMPSON 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates
for improvement in the quality of life in local communities through its endeavors in the
fields of health care and cancer awareness and recognizes June 15, 2011, as Susan G. Komen
for the Cure Day at the legislature.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Susan G. Komen for the Cure and its Louisiana affiliates for improvement in2
the quality of life in local communities through its endeavors in the fields of health3
care and cancer awareness and to recognize June 15, 2011, as Susan G. Komen for4
the Cure Day at the legislature.5
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the largest source of nonprofit funds6
dedicated to the fight against breast cancer awareness in the world, investing more than $1.97
billion since 1982 and pledging another $2 billion over the next decade; and8
WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is slated to provide $58 million in breast9
cancer research grants nationwide this year, a significant investment in a down economy,10
and Komen has invested more than $610 million in research funding globally during the past11
thirty years; and12
WHEREAS, Komen Louisiana Affiliates invested $2.2 million in local communities13
last year for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, breast health education, and14
outreach, and nationwide, Komen Affiliates invested a total of $130 million in their local15
communities; and16
WHEREAS, in Louisiana, an estimated two thousand five hundred thirty new cases17
of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed among women in 2010, and six hundred twenty18 SR NO. 99

women died of the disease; and1
WHEREAS, among states, Louisiana has the highest rate of breast cancer mortality,2
and except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among3
women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women; and4
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in recognition of Susan G.5
Komen for the Cure and to commend its efforts in the fight against breast cancer.6
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana7
does hereby commend Susan G. Koman for the Cure for its unwavering dedication to the8
fight against breast cancer and does hereby recognize Wednesday, June 15, 2011, as Capitol9
Day for the Cure. 10
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to11
Susan G. Komen for the Cure.12
