SUPPLEMENTAL PAY: Waives the one-year service requirement for eligibility for state
supplemental pay for firefighters ordered to active military duty prior to completion
of one year of service
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 33:2002(A)(1) and to enact R.S. 33:2002(A)(5), relative to2
eligibility for state supplemental pay for firefighters; to provide for eligibility for3
certain firefighters who are ordered to active military duty; to waive certain4
requirements as to length of employment; and to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. R. S. 33:2002(A)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted and R.S.7
33:2002(A)(5) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 8
ยง2002.  Extra compensation9
A.(1) In addition to the compensation now paid by any municipality, parish,10
fire protection district, or other political subdivision maintaining a fire department,11
or by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana or the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana,12
hereinafter referred to as "tribe", or by any nonprofit corporation contracting with13
any such political subdivision to provide fire protection services to every paid,14
regularly employed employee who is paid not less than three hundred dollars per15
month, not including supplemental pay, as distinguished from part-time employees16
and volunteers of such fire department, who are carried on the payroll of such fire17

parish or municipality or tribe obtained through lawfully adopted bond issues,1
lawfully assessed taxes, or other funds available for such purpose, either directly or2
through a board or commission set up by law or ordinance of the parish or3
municipality or tribe, shall be paid extra compensation by the state in the amount of4
five hundred dollars per month for each such paid employee who has completed or5
who hereafter completes one year of service.  The provisions of Paragraph (5) of this6
Subsection shall govern the requirements for length of service for employees who7
were ordered to active miliary duty in the armed services of the United States during8
their initial term of employment.9

(5)(a) An employee who was ordered to active military duty in the armed11
services of the United States before the completion of one year of service, and who12
had completed and passed a certified fireman's training program required under this13
Subsection prior to such military service, shall be eligible to receive extra14
compensation beginning one year from his initial hiring date.15
(b) An employee who was ordered to active military duty in the armed16
services of the United States before the completion of one year of service, and who17
had not yet completed and passed a certified fireman's training program required18
under this Subsection prior to such military activity, shall be eligible to receive extra19
compensation immediately upon returning to employment and completion of a20
certified fireman's training program required under this Subsection.21

Abstract: Waives the one year employment requirement for eligibility for state
supplemental pay for firefighters who are ordered to activity military duty before
they complete their first year of employment.
Present law provides the requirements for the payment of state supplemental pay for
firefighters employed by a municipality, parish, fire protection district, a tribal fire

completion of one year of employment and completion of a certified fireman's training
program are required. The amount of extra compensation paid by the state is $500 per
month.
Proposed law retains present law and adds provisions waiving the one-year employment
requirement before eligibility to receive supplemental pay for firefighters who were ordered
to active military duty in the armed services of the U.S. during their initial term of
employment.
Proposed law authorizes the payment of supplemental pay beginning one year from the
initial hiring date of a firefighter who was ordered to active miliary duty before the
completion of one year of employment, and who had completed and passed a certified
fireman's training program required by 	present law prior to such military service.
Proposed law authorizes the payment of supplemental pay upon the completion of a certified
fireman's training program required by present law for a rehired firefighter who was ordered
to active military duty before the completion of one year of service.
