COURTS/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Provides for deputy constables of the justice of the peace
court in Caddo Parish
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 13:2583.3(A) and (B), relative to constables; to provide with2
respect to the constable of a justice of the peace court in Caddo Parish; to provide for3
the appointment of one or more deputy constables; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 13:2583.3(A) and (B) are hereby amended and reenacted to read as6
follows: 7
ยง2583.3.  Deputies; oath; compensations; Caddo Parish8
A. Each duly elected constable of a justice of the peace court in Caddo9
Parish may appoint one or more deputy constable constables, if necessary, for whose10
acts the constable shall be responsible. Before entering upon his duties, each deputy11
shall take the oath required by the constitution and the laws of this state. Any deputy12
constable appointed pursuant to this Section shall not be entitled to any13
compensation from any local governing body or political subdivision, other than the14
constable's office, and shall not be entitled to any compensation from the state. Each15
constable may fix the compensation of his deputy or deputies. He may pay from the16
fees generated by his office any compensation due the to a deputy, the premiums on17
bonds required by him of a deputy in charge of public funds, insurance premiums,18
and any expenses necessary for the performance of duties required of the a deputy.19 HLS 12RS-54	ENGROSSED

He may issue monthly or twice per month, at his discretion, to the deputy warrants1
or checks for the amounts due him to a deputy.2
B. Each deputy constable authorized by this Section shall have the same3
qualifications as required by law for a constable of a justice of the peace court. The4

elected, but he must be a resident of Caddo Parish.6

Abstract: Authorizes each constable of a justice of the peace court in Caddo Parish to
appoint one or more deputy constables. 
Present law authorizes each constable of a justice of the peace court in Caddo Parish to
appoint one deputy constable to assist with the responsibilities of the constable's office.
Further provides that any appointed deputy constable shall not be entitled to compensation
from the state, or from any local governing authority or political subdivision. Provides that
the constable may fix the compensation of the deputy who may be paid from fees generated
by the office of the constable.
Proposed law amends present law to authorize the constable of a justice of the peace court
in Caddo Parish to appoint one or more deputy constables and otherwise retains present law.
