HLS 12RS-1510 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 110 BY REPRESENTATIVES DOVE, HARRISON, AND WHITNEY AND SENATORS ALLAIN AND CHABERT SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Oct. 17 annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana.2 WHEREAS, mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the thin layer of3 cells lining the body's internal organs, known as the mesothelium, and that is caused by the4 inhalation of asbestos and asbestos particles; and5 WHEREAS, mesothelioma has been responsible for more than twenty thousand6 deaths in the United States alone, and the Centers for Disease Control estimates that between7 two and three thousand cases are diagnosed each year; and8 WHEREAS, many of the products that include asbestos are still in homes and offices9 throughout the country but are especially prevalent in factories, shipyards, power plants,10 chemical plants, and automotive and railroad structures, where men and women of Louisiana11 labor so that other citizens of this great state might enjoy a sturdy and efficient infrastructure12 and a stable and prosperous economy; and 13 WHEREAS, unlike most types of cancer, mesothelioma can almost always be14 prevented by education and awareness; and15 WHEREAS, in memory of longtime Terrebonne Parish assessor Gene Bonvillain,16 the Terrebonne Parish Council has designated his birthday, October seventeenth, as17 Mesothelioma Day; and18 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day to raise awareness of19 mesothelioma and honor those affected by the disease throughout the state.20 HLS 12RS-1510 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 110 Page 2 of 2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby1 recognize October seventeenth annually as Mesothelioma Awareness Day in Louisiana.2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted3 to the family of Gene P.
