HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 125

BOATS/SHIPS/VESSELS: Declares May 19 through May 25, 2012, as Safe Boating Week
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To proclaim May 19 through May 25, 2012, as "Safe Boating Week" in Louisiana.2
WHEREAS, the United States has over thirteen million boats, and three hundred3
twenty-one thousand of those boats are on Louisiana waters; and4
WHEREAS, the vast majority of boating incidents are caused by human error or poor5
judgment and not by the boat, equipment, or environmental factors; and6
WHEREAS, seventy- four percent of our state's fatalities on the water are due to7
drowning; and8
WHEREAS, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning each9
year would be alive today had they worn their life jackets; and10
WHEREAS, while boats are a marvelous source of recreation, unknowledgeable boat11
operators are a risk to other boaters when they do not know or obey the navigation rules of12
the road, drink alcohol, or take drugs while operating a boat, or choose not to wear a life13
jacket; and14
WHEREAS, one precaution, wearing a life jacket, could save eighty percent of the15
lives of those who fall into the water unexpectedly; and16
WHEREAS, boating knowledge and skills are important in reducing human error and17
improving judgment; if people are aware of the risk, they are more likely to take the18
precautionary measures to protect themselves, their friends, family, and others, which is why19
we must spread the message of boating safety education in our state.20 HLS 12RS-3527 ORIGINAL

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby1
proclaim May 19 through May 25, 2012, as "Safe Boating Week" in the state of Louisiana.2
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted3
to the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.4
