CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of Terry Alan Mathews of Boyce
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Terry Alan Mathews of2
Boyce.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of Terry Mathews, who passed away on5
Friday, February 24, 2012, at the age of forty-seven; and6
WHEREAS, Terry Mathews was a distinguished resident of the state of Louisiana;7
and8
WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews' honors and awards as a baseball player at Holy Savior9
Menard Central High School merited his jersey's retirement in 1987; and10
WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews earned many accolades while playing at Northeast11
Louisiana University, including four Hitting Awards from 1984 to 1987, election as team12
captain in 1987, and the 1987 Pelican Cup Most Valuable Player Award, but none rival his13
eventual induction into the Northeast Louisiana University Hall of Fame in 1996; and14
WHEREAS, Terry Mathews' professional career, which included pitching for the15
Texas Rangers, the Houston Astros, the Florida Marlins, the Baltimore Orioles, and the16
Kansas City Royals, lasted from 1987 until 2000; and17
WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews continued to contribute to Louisiana baseball after his18
retirement by serving as a volunteer coach for Holy Savior Menard baseball and mentoring19

WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews' service to the state of Louisiana continued when he1
joined the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office in 2008 and worked as a student resource officer2
at Holy Savior Menard Central High School; and  3
WHEREAS, Terry Mathews was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents,4
Eugene and Maggie Andries; paternal grandparents, John A. and Sylvia Mathews; and his5
father, John A. "Sonny" Mathews, Jr.; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews is survived by his high school sweetheart of twenty-three7
years, Emily Lynch Mathews; three children, Marcus A. Mathews, Molly K. Mathews, and8
Magan A. Mathews; his mother, Fay E. "Duke" Andries Mathews; three sisters, Patricia9
Myers, Kerry Knapp, and Susan Williams; and three brothers, John A. Mathews III, Roy10
Mathews, and Jim Mathews; and11
WHEREAS, though the death of Mr. Mathews has left a tremendous void in his12
community, his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who knew and loved13
him.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15
extend deepest condolences to the family of Terry Mathews from a grateful state that truly16
appreciates his important contributions.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the18
family of Terry Mathews.19
