Nursing Day
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the first nurse practice act2
in Louisiana and to recognize July 10, 2012, as Louisiana State Board of Nursing3
Day.4
WHEREAS, on July 10, 1912, Governor Luther E. Hall signed Act No. 138 of the5
1912 Regular Session of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana providing for the6
regulation of nursing practice and education; and7
WHEREAS, this law was the forerunner of Louisiana's present Nurse Practice Act;8
and9
WHEREAS, past and present members of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing have10
worked to establish standards for nursing practice and nursing education that seek to ensure11
access by Louisiana citizens to safe and competent registered nurses; and12
WHEREAS, to support and promote the best interests of the public, the nursing13
community has given longstanding support to the regulation of nursing practice and14
education; and15
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing has demonstrated leadership in16
nursing regulation at the state and national level; and17
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing regulates over fifty-seven18
thousand individuals who practice as registered nurses or advanced practice registered nurses19 HLS 12RS-5114 ORIGINAL

and regulates curricula for over six thousand individuals undertaking clinical nursing courses1
in Louisiana; and2
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing approves and oversees twenty-six3
programs that prepare nursing students for initial registered nurse licensure and seven4
graduate programs that prepare registered nurses for advanced practice registered nurse5
licensure; and6
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing has met the request of the7
Legislature of Louisiana to establish the Louisiana Center for Nursing; and8
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Center for Nursing completed the state's first official9
nursing demand study to determine the statewide need for nurses across all levels of nursing10
personnel; and11
WHEREAS, this legislative body recognizes the vital importance of access to a safe12
and competent registered nurse workforce by all Louisiana citizens.13
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby14
commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the first nurse practice act in15
Louisiana on July 10, 2012, and the creation of the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, the16
agency whose mission is to assure Louisiana citizens access to safe and competent registered17
nurses and advanced practice registered nurses.18
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby19
commend the continuing contributions, past and present, to the health and well-being of all20
Louisiana citizens by the dedicated members who have served on the Louisiana State Board21
of Nursing.22
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby23
recognize July 10, 2012, as Louisiana State Board of Nursing Day in Louisiana.24
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted25
