HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 195
BY REPRESENTATIVE CARMODY
CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of Michael Barry Carmody of
Shreveport, a special Marine and a great FBI agent
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Michael Barry Carmody of2
Shreveport, a special Marine and a great FBI agent.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of Michael Barry Carmody on5
Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the age of seventy-three; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, where he7
graduated from St. John's High School; and8
WHEREAS, after he graduated from his grandfather's alma mater, Spring Hill9
College, in Mobile, Alabama, Mr. Carmody enlisted in the United States Marine Corps,10
serving his country with valor and fortitude for three years and attaining the rank of captain;11
and 12
WHEREAS, following his honorable discharge from the Marines, Mr. Carmody13
joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and he served with great dedication and14
distinction for thirty-three years in cities throughout the nation, including Minneapolis,15
Aberdeen, Kansas City, and Tampa; and16
WHEREAS, upon his retirement from the FBI in 1998, Mr. Carmody had17
distinguished himself as the agency's oldest special agent and one of the finest ever to serve18

WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was an active member of his community and served on1
the local boards of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Davis Island Yacht Club, and the2
Hillsborough County Emergency Medical Council; and3
WHEREAS, throughout his life, including in his battle with brain cancer, Mr.4
Carmody showed himself to be a man of uncommon strength and dignity, and he was widely5
respected and admired and deeply loved by his family, his friends, his colleagues at the FBI,6
and his fellow Marines; and7
WHEREAS, additionally, Mr. Carmody was a Eucharistic Minister at Christ the King8
Catholic Church and was a Big Brother for more than fifteen years; he also served as a9
member of the Tampa Yacht and Country Club and the Society of Former Special Agents10
of the FBI and as a past member of the Downtown Rotary Club and the Tampa Bay11
Committee on Foreign Relations; and12
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was a devoted family man whose children and13
grandchildren were his pride and joy; he is survived by his wife of forty years, Karen Welsh14
Carmody; his son, Roderick Starmer Carmody and his wife, Emily; his daughter, Elizabeth15
Carmody Carrere and her husband, Christopher; his grandchildren, Caroline Anne, Matthew16
Hanlon, and Harrison John Carmody and Adelaide McKay, Genevieve Carmody, and John17
Barry Carrere; and twenty-eight nieces and nephews; and18
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Roderick19
Carmody and the youngest brother of his siblings who survive him, Arthur Roderick20
Carmody, Jr., and his wife Mary, Josephine Gaughan Carmody, and Thomas Gaughan21
Carmody and his wife Katherine; and22
WHEREAS, Mr. Carmody will always be remembered as a consummate Irish23
storyteller, a lover and student of history, and a patriot with a fervent loyalty to the Marine24
Corps and to the FBI; and25
WHEREAS, Michael Barry Carmody, a true son of the South, merits posthumous26
commendation for the indelible mark he left on his community, state, and nation and27
countless individuals as one of the state's most respected, admired, and beloved citizens.28
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby29
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Michael Barry Carmody of30 HLS 12RS-5203	ORIGINAL

Shreveport, a special Marine and a great FBI agent, does hereby commend him1
posthumously for his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions, does hereby2
record for posterity his dedicated and productive service to his community, state, and nation,3
and does hereby recognize that his legacy and memory shall live forever in the minds and4
hearts of all who knew and loved him and will forever bring great pride and honor to the city5
of Shreveport, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.6
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted7
to the family of Michael Barry Carmody.8
