PUBLIC BUILDINGS/ST CAPL: Commemorates the 80
th
 anniversary of the dedication of
the La. State Capitol and recognizes it as a great place to visit
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol2
and to recognize it as a great place to visit.3
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Capitol's ornate interior, luscious grounds, historic4
location, and towering stature make it a wonderful place to visit, without which any trip to5
the state of Louisiana or the city of Baton Rouge is not complete; and6
WHEREAS, USA Today has named the Louisiana State Capitol one of ten great7
places to walk through history at state capitols; and8
WHEREAS, designed by the New Orleans architecture firm of Weiss, Dreyfous, and9
Seiferth, construction of the new capitol building on the former site of Louisiana State10
University and the Pentagon Barracks began on December 16, 1930, under the guidance of11
Governor Huey P. Long, in the depths of the Great Depression; the economic conditions of12
the times permitted a host of talented artists and artisans, who would otherwise not have13
been available, to execute the array of artistic details that adorn the building; and14
WHEREAS, the dedication of the state capitol occurred on May 16, 1932, along with15
the inauguration of Governor Oscar K. Allen; and16
WHEREAS, the capitol, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark,17
remains one of the nation's foremost examples of the Art Deco style that was popular in the18
1920s and 1930s; and19
WHEREAS, standing at four-hundred-fifty-feet tall with thirty-four stories,20
Louisiana's State Capitol is the tallest state capitol in the United States and remains an21 HLS 12RS-1081	ORIGINAL

extremely popular destination for visitors from throughout the state, the nation, and the1
world; and2
WHEREAS, it is fitting to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication3
of the Louisiana State Capitol and to recognize its distinguished place in the history of the4
Pelican State.5
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby6
commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol,7
does hereby recognize it as a great place to visit, and does hereby celebrate the deep sense8
of pride, honor, and hope that this magnificent building brings to the citizens of the state of9
Louisiana.10
