A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol
and to recognize it as a great place to visit.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Capitol's ornate interior, luscious grounds, historic
location, and towering stature make it a wonderful place to visit, without which any trip to
the state of Louisiana or the city of Baton Rouge is not complete; and
WHEREAS, USA Today has named the Louisiana State Capitol one of ten great
places to walk through history at state capitols; and
WHEREAS, designed by the New Orleans architecture firm of Weiss, Dreyfous, and
Seiferth, construction of the new capitol building on the former site of Louisiana State
University and the Pentagon Barracks began on December 16, 1930, under the guidance of
Governor Huey P. Long, in the depths of the Great Depression; the economic conditions of
the times permitted a host of talented artists and artisans, who would otherwise not have
been available, to execute the array of artistic details that adorn the building; and
WHEREAS, the dedication of the state capitol occurred on May 16, 1932, along with
the inauguration of Governor Oscar K. Allen; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 44
