GERMAIN, TALBOT, THIBAUT, THIERRY, THOMPSON, WHITNEY, ALFRED WILLIAMS, PATRICK WILLIAMS, AND WILLMOTT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol and to recognize it as a great place to visit. WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Capitol's ornate interior, luscious grounds, historic location, and towering stature make it a wonderful place to visit, without which any trip to the state of Louisiana or the city of Baton Rouge is not complete; and WHEREAS, USA Today has named the Louisiana State Capitol one of ten great places to walk through history at state capitols; and WHEREAS, designed by the New Orleans architecture firm of Weiss, Dreyfous, and Seiferth, construction of the new capitol building on the former site of Louisiana State University and the Pentagon Barracks began on December 16, 1930, under the guidance of Governor Huey P. Long, in the depths of the Great Depression; the economic conditions of the times permitted a host of talented artists and artisans, who would otherwise not have been available, to execute the array of artistic details that adorn the building; and WHEREAS, the dedication of the state capitol occurred on May 16, 1932, along with the inauguration of Governor Oscar K. Allen; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 44 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the capitol, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, remains one of the nation's foremost examples of the Art Deco style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s; and WHEREAS, standing at four-hundred-fifty-feet tall with thirty-four stories, Louisiana's State Capitol is the tallest state capitol in the United States and remains an extremely popular destination for visitors from throughout the state, the nation, and the world; and WHEREAS, it is fitting to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol and to recognize its distinguished place in the history of the Pelican State. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commemorate the eightieth anniversary of the dedication of the Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby recognize it as a great place to visit, and does hereby celebrate the deep sense of pride, honor, and hope that this magnificent building brings to the citizens of the state of Louisiana.
