HLS 12RS-1638 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 55 BY REPRESENTATIVE HOLLIS HISTORIC COMMEMORATI ON: Recognizes "Le Tour d'Iberville" as part of the Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To recognize "Le Tour d'Iberville" as part of the Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor.2 WHEREAS, upon the celebration in 2012 of the bicentennial of the statehood of3 Louisiana, it is appropriate to commemorate significant events in the history of the Pelican4 State; and5 WHEREAS, Louis XIV, monarch of France, commissioned Canadian hero Pierre Le6 Moyne Sieur d'Iberville to explore the south coast of North America, to locate the7 Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico, to explore the river and thus verify the French8 claim to the center of the continent through which the great river flowed, and to take9 possession of all the lands which it drained; and10 WHEREAS, in fulfillment of his mission, d'Iberville and his brother, Jean-Baptiste11 Sieur de Bienville, explored the Mississippi River; and12 WHEREAS, the brothers learned from the American Indians of a Manchac, or back13 entrance and short cut, through the Ascentia and Amite rivers and lakes Maurepas and14 Pontchartrain to their ships anchored off Ship Island; and15 WHEREAS, the explorer and founder of Louisiana, Pierre Le Moyne Sieur16 d'Iberville, and four Canadian coureurs des bois traversed this route in two canoes, and they17 made camp on Goose Point near the mouth of Bayou Lacombe on March 28, 1699; and18 WHEREAS, three hundred thirteen years later, on March 28, 2012, in19 commemoration of this memorable and historic event, the Lacombe Heritage Center and20 HLS 12RS-1638 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 55 Page 2 of 2 Lacombe Economic Area Development are recognizing "Le Tour d' Iberville" as part of the1 Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor.2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby3 recognize "Le Tour d'Iberville" as part of the Lacombe Cultural Heritage Corridor and does4 hereby encourage the citizens of Louisiana, as they celebrate the bicentennial of Louisiana's5 statehood, to commemorate the singular place that "Le Tour d'Iberville" holds in the annals6 of the history of Lacombe and the state.7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted8 to the coordinator of the Lacombe Heritage Center.9 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
