A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To urge and request the board of directors of the Rapides Primary Health Care Center to
rename the center in honor of the late Israel "Bo" Curtis, former state representative,
of Alexandria.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize and record the many significant
accomplishments and contributions of the late Israel "Bo" Curtis of Alexandria; and
WHEREAS, a graduate of Peabody High School in Alexandria, Mr. Curtis received
a bachelor of science degree from Grambling State University and a master of education
degree from Northwestern State University; and
WHEREAS, after serving in the United States Army, Mr. Curtis served the school
system of Rapides Parish as a longtime teacher and coach and as a member and vice
president of the school board; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Curtis served four highly effective terms as a member of the
Louisiana House of Representatives, and he used every opportunity as an able and
productive legislator to serve his constituency in Rapides Parish and the citizens of the state
of Louisiana in an honorable and dedicated manner; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Curtis steadfastly endeavored to improve the welfare of his fellow
citizens, and his legislative accomplishments were numerous; and
WHEREAS, the first African American elected to the legislature from Alexandria
since Reconstruction, Mr. Curtis worked on and supported many important pieces of
legislation during his tenure in the Louisiana House of Representatives, including legislation ENROLLEDHCR NO. 61

related to public education, retirement benefits for educators and police officers, and
boosting his district's economy; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Curtis was one of Louisiana's finest sons, a man of wisdom who
used his wisdom and integrity to change Rapides Parish and the state for the better; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Curtis recognized a need for better health care services in his
community, and with his determination and tireless efforts on its behalf, he was highly
instrumental in the establishment of the Rapides Primary Health Care Center; and
WHEREAS, there is strong community support for renaming the center in memory
of Mr. Curtis, demonstrating the indelible mark that he left on the minds and hearts of his
fellow citizens; and
WHEREAS, renaming the Rapides Primary Health Care Center, an establishment
that brings deep pride to Mr. Curtis' beloved Rapides Parish, in recognition of such a
dedicated and productive servant of his community, state, and nation would be a fitting
tribute to this distinguished gentleman.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
urge and request the board of directors of the Rapides Primary Health Care Center to rename
the center in honor of the late Israel "Bo" Curtis, former state representative, of Alexandria,
in recognition of the significant role he played in its establishment and his extraordinary
contributions to Rapides Parish.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the chairman of the board of directors of the Rapides Primary Health Care Center.
