HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 79

COLLEGES/TECHNICAL: Requests that the Board of Supervisors of Community and
Technical Colleges report on the status of the reconstruction and reeopening of the
Sidney N. Collier Technical Division site of Delgado Community College
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To urge and request the Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical Colleges to2
submit a written report relative to the status of the reconstruction and reopening of3
the Sidney N. Collier Technical Division site of Delgado Community College to the4
House Committee on Education and the Senate Committee on Education by not later5
than May 15, 2012.6
WHEREAS, located on Louisa Street in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, the Sidney7
N. Collier Technical Division site of Delgado Community College, formerly a campus of8
the Louisiana Technical College, suffered catastrophic damage in Hurricane Katrina; and9
WHEREAS, many residents of New Orleans were devastated by the destruction of10
this campus, which was a true neighborhood institution and was deeply beloved by its11
students, faculty, staff, and alumni and by the community as a whole; and 12
WHEREAS, pursuant to Act No. 521 of the 2010 Regular Session of the Legislature,13
the Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical Colleges transferred all programs and14
courses of study offered through certain campuses of the Louisiana Technical College,15
including the Sidney N. Collier campus, to Delgado Community College, along with the16
funds, facilities, property, obligations, and functions relative thereto; and17
WHEREAS, the Sidney N. Collier campus is now designated as a Technical Division18
site of Delgado Community College and remains closed; and19 HLS 12RS-2403	ENGROSSED

WHEREAS, the rebuilding and reopening the Sidney N. Collier site, viewed by many1
as a cornerstone of the Ninth Ward community, would reinforce this unique neighborhood's2
passionate and steadfast revitalization efforts; and 3
WHEREAS, in addition to meeting the educational needs of the community,4
reopening the site would serve as another welcome and hopeful example of the ongoing5
restoration and rebuilding that is possible throughout the Ninth Ward, the city of New6
Orleans, and all hurricane-affected areas in Louisiana; and7
 WHEREAS, there is both a strong need and strong community support for the timely8
reconstruction and reopening of the Sidney N. Collier site.9
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby10
urge and request the Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical Colleges to submit11
a written report relative to the status of the reconstruction and reopening of the Sidney N.12
Collier Technical Division site of Delgado Community College to the House Committee on13
Education and the Senate Committee on Education by not later than May 15, 2012.14
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted15
to the chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical Colleges.16
