SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes July of 2012 as Sarcoma Awareness Month
in La.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize July 2012 as Sarcoma Awareness Month in Louisiana.2
WHEREAS, sarcoma is a cancer of connective tissues, such as muscle, cartilage, fat,3
bone, and blood vessels, and can arise anywhere in the body; and4
WHEREAS, about eleven thousand Americans are diagnosed with sarcoma each5
year, five thousand die each year, and fifty thousand are struggling with the disease at any6
one time; and7
WHEREAS, about one percent of cancers diagnosed in adults and about fifteen8
percent of cancers diagnosed in children are sarcoma; and9
WHEREAS, more than fifty subtypes of sarcomas have been identified; and10
WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute recognizes that sarcoma is frequently11
misdiagnosed and highly underreported; and12
WHEREAS, nonprofit sarcoma organizations want to raise awareness in hopes that13
more patients will get proper diagnosis and treatment, and these organizations have agreed14
upon July of 2012 as Sarcoma Awareness Month.15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby16
recognize July of 2012 as Sarcoma Awareness Month in Louisiana.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted18
