HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 132

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of Ruby Mae Washington
A RESOLUTION1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Ruby Mae Washington.2
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the3
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Ruby May Washington on4
Friday, May 18, 2012, at the age of eighty-one; and5
WHEREAS, on July 4, 1930, Ruby Mae Washington was born to Icile and Ruby6
Williams, in Union, Mississippi; and7
WHEREAS, Mrs. Washington was raised by her grandparents, William H. and Lillie8
L. Bostick, in Zwolle, Louisiana; and 9
WHEREAS, at a young age, Mrs. Washington united with the St. John Baptist10
Church of Zwolle under the leadership of Reverend William Garner, and she later moved11
to Monroe and became a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church; and12
WHEREAS, Mrs. Washington was united in holy matrimony with Garfield13
Washington, Jr., on April 14, 1954, and to this union, one child, Angela Denise, was born;14
and15
WHEREAS, a graduate of Southern University, Mrs. Washington served with great16
distinction and effectiveness as a librarian at Alto and Start high schools in Richland Parish17
for thirty years; and18
WHEREAS, Mrs. Washington was a life member of Southern University Alumni19
Federation, Monroe Chapter, and served as the secretary of the Samoan Civic and Social20

WHEREAS, Ruby Mae Washington was preceded in death by her husband, Garfield1
Washington; her parents, Ruby and Icile Williams; two brothers, Alton and Charles2
Williams; and her uncle, William Henry Bostick; she is survived by her loving and devoted3
daughter, Angela Denise (the Honorable James "Jamie" E. Mayo); two grandchildren, Jared4
Brandon and Ashley Denise Mayo; one great-grandson, Tyler Alexander Williams; Drs. Al5
and Annette McHenry; Noella Bostick; one brother, Billy D. Williams; one special6
sister-in-law, Delores Williams; a special cousin, Helene "Baby Dear" Joyner; and numerous7
other relatives and friends; and8
WHEREAS, with the death of Ruby Mae Washington, Louisiana has lost one of her9
finest citizens, a woman of many gifts and talents who has left an indelible mark on the lives10
of those she touched; and11
WHEREAS, although the death of Ruby Mae Washington has left a tremendous void12
in her community, her memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who loved13
her and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the15
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the16
death of Ruby Mae Washington, does hereby record for posterity her outstanding17
accomplishments and singular contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation18
for the tremendous pride and honor that this wonderful woman will forever bring to her19
family, friends, church, community, and state.20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted21
to the family of Ruby Mae Washington.22
