COMMENDATIONS: Commends the Rebirth Brass Band of New Orleans
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Rebirth Brass Band upon winning a Grammy Award for Best Regional2
Roots Music Album.3
WHEREAS, on February 12, 2012, in Los Angeles, California, at the Fifty-Fourth4
Annual Grammy Awards, the Rebirth Brass Band's album, Rebirth of New Orleans, won the5
first ever Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album; and6
WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band's historic victory in this brand new Grammy7
category paves the way for Louisiana musicians to receive this prestigious recognition and8
gain worldwide exposure in the future; and9
WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band's unforgettable live performances and recorded10
albums have inspired the people of not only their community, their state, and their country,11
but also the world; and12
WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band's music is at once a favorite among locals and13
an entry point for cultural enthusiasts not accustomed to the New Orleans music scene; and14
WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band was formed in 1983 and has been integral to the15
late twentieth century revival of New Orleans brass bands; and16
WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band has infused traditional brass band music with17
funk, thus leaving a lasting impression on the history of music and the history of New18

WHEREAS, the Rebirth Brass Band's name captures the essence of their1
contributions to the city of New Orleans; their music has been nothing short of the rhythmic2
pulse of the city's inspiring renewal and recovery; and3
WHEREAS, during this momentous period in Louisiana history, the degree to which4
Rebirth's music plays in the hearts of a nation correlates to the degree to which Americans5
understand that the world would forever be at a loss without New Orleans and South6
Louisiana; and7
WHEREAS, Rebirth Brass Band's snare drummer, Derrick Tabb, deserves special8
commendation for founding and operating the Roots of Music, a nonprofit after school music9
program and marching band that has channeled the energy of hundreds of children from10
throughout the city of New Orleans into playing music and continuing the unique musical11
traditions of the Crescent City.12
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the13
Legislature of Louisiana hereby commends the Rebirth Brass Band upon winning the first14
Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album, hereby recognizes the members of the band15
for their remarkable musical accomplishments and unique talents, and hereby expresses to16
them enduring gratitude for the immeasurable pride and honor that they bring to the state of17
Louisiana.18
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted19
to the Rebirth Brass Band.20
