DENTISTRY: Recognizes Tuesday, May 15, 2012, as Dental Hygiene Day and commends
the Dental Hygienists' Association for their outstanding contributions throughout the
state
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Tuesday, May 15, 2012, as Dental Hygiene Day and to commend the2
Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association and dental hygienists around the state for3
their outstanding contributions to the oral health of citizens of the state of Louisiana.4
WHEREAS, Tuesday, May 15, 2012, has been designated as Dental Hygiene Day5
in the state; and 6
WHEREAS, a dental hygienist is a preventive oral health professional, licensed in7
dental hygiene, who provides educational, clinical, and therapeutic services supporting total8
health care through the promotion of optimal oral health; and9
WHEREAS, the education of a dental hygienist emphasizes all the basic sciences and10
the eligibility for licensure is based upon the successful completion of both a written11
National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and a clinical state board examination; and12
WHEREAS, dental hygienists are committed to maintaining the highest levels of13
quality and to keeping abreast of the most advanced technology in their field, as they14
participate in continuing education courses in oral health care to maintain their licenses,15
enhance their skills, and ensure that they provide state-of-the-art oral hygiene to their16
patients; and17
WHEREAS, a dental hygienist is a vital member of a complete dental team and is18
responsible for providing treatment that helps to prevent oral disease and for educating the19
patient to maintain optimal oral health in order to prevent oral diseases; and20 HLS 12RS-4063 ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, for over eighty-nine years, registered dental hygienists have provided1
quality preventive oral health care to millions of American adults and children; and2
WHEREAS, dental hygienists have also established a record of excellence in3
providing quality care for those patients with special needs; and4
WHEREAS, there are approximately one thousand, six hundred licensed dental5
hygienists serving the oral health care needs of the people of the state of Louisiana alone;6
and7
WHEREAS, according to the National Dental Hygienists' Association, the month of8
October is designated as National Dental Hygiene Month, focusing on the preventive9
benefits of good oral hygiene; and 10
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association, along with other dental11
professionals, celebrated Children's Dental Health in February, which focused on the needs12
of dental care for the children of the state of Louisiana; and13
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize dental hygienists and to encourage citizens14
to become familiar with and appreciative of the benefits of good dental hygiene. 15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the16
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 15, 2012, as Dental Hygiene17
Day in the state and does hereby commend the Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association and18
dental hygienists around Louisiana for their tireless efforts in promoting good dental health19
for the citizens of the state. 20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted21
to the Louisiana Dental Hygienists' Association.22
