Requires the state to allow legislators to use surplus space in a state building for a legislative office within their district. (8/1/12) AN ACT1 To enact R.S. 24:31.4(E), relative to legislators; to authorize and provide for surplus space2 in state-owned property to be utilized as offices for legislators; to provide for a3 procedure for requesting such space; and to provide for related matters.4 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5 Section 1. R.S. 24:31.4(E) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6 ยง31.4. Members' office allowance7 * * *8 E. The commissioner of administration shall implement and maintain a9 procedure wherein, at no cost to a legislator, surplus space in immovable10 property owned by the state and located within a legislator's district can be11 utilized as the legislator's office. A legislator seeking to utilize such surplus12 space as his office shall make a written request for such space to the13 commissioner. DIGEST Gallot (SB 106) Present law provides for a monthly allowance of $500 for members of the legislature for payment of rent for office space for their legislative offices. Proposed law retains present law and directs the commissioner of administration to implement and maintain a procedure wherein, at no cost to a legislator, surplus space in immovable properties owned by the state can be utilized for the purpose of establishing a legislative office within the legislator's district. Effective August 1, 2012. (Adds R.S. 24:31.4(E)) Summary of Amendments Adopted by Senate Committee Amendments Proposed by Senate Committee on Senate and Governmental Affairs to the original bill 1. Clarifies that space must be surplus rather than vacant. 2. Clarifies that the space must be within a legislator's district.
