LOCAL ELECTIONS. Changes the dates for certain municipal and parochial elections.

AN ACT1
To enact Part I-B of Chapter 5 of Title 18 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, to be2
comprised of R.S. 18:418.1 and 418.2, relative to the election code; to provide for3
certain municipal and parochial elections; to provide for dates for elections to be held4
in 2014; and to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. Part I-B of Chapter 5 of Title 18 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of7
1950, to be comprised of R.S. 18:418.1 and 418.2, are hereby enacted to read as follows: 8
PART I-B. SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR CERTAIN ELECTIONS HELD IN 20149
§ 418.1. Applicability of Part10
Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the11
provisions contained in this Part shall be applicable in 2014 to the general12
elections for parochial and municipal officers, special general elections and13
proposition or question elections held in a parish containing a municipality with14
a population of three hundred thousand or more.15

18:402(D)(2), special general elections provided in R.S. 18:402(E)(2)(e) and1
proposition or question elections provided in R.S. 18:402(F)(6) for a parish2
containing a municipality with a population of three hundred thousand or more3
shall not be held on the fourth Saturday after the first Saturday in February in4
2014, but shall be held on the third Saturday in March.5
Section 2.  The provisions of this Part shall be effective until June 1, 2014.6

Proposed law provides that the general elections for parochial and municipal officers, special
general elections and proposition or question elections held in a parish containing a
municipality with a population of 300,000 or more will not be held on the fourth Saturday
after the first Saturday in February in 2014, but be held on the third Saturday in March.
Proposed law provides that the provisions of proposed law are only effective until June 1,
2014.
 
Effective August 1, 2012.

Summary of Amendments Adopted by Senate
Senate Floor Amendments to engrossed bill.
1. Deleted all language in the engrossed version of the bill which provided
exception regarding general elections for parochial and municipal officers in
2014.
2. Added language requiring that general elections for parochial and municipal
officers, special general elections and proposition or question elections held
in a parish containing a municipality with a population of 300,000 or more
not be held on the fourth Saturday after the first Saturday in February in
2014, but be held on the third Saturday in March.
3.Added language stating that proposed law is only effective until June 1,
2014.
