SHERIFFS.  Provides for membership of part-time employees. (6/30/12)
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 11:2174(B)(1)(b)(iv) and (d), relative to the Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund;2
to provide for membership for part-time employees; to provide for an effective date;3
and to provide for related matters.4
Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. R.S. 11:2174(B)(1)(b)(iv) and (d) are hereby enacted to read as follows:7

(b) Each deputy, including the criminal and civil deputies of the parish of12
Orleans, and the criers of the several divisions of the Civil District Court for the13
parish of Orleans, who, on the date of the filing of the application to become a14
member, is age eighteen or over, shall become a member of this fund, provided his15
monthly salary including state supplemental pay, is not less than the following:16

(iv) One thousand dollars, if employed subsequent to December 31, 2012.1

(d) Service rendered by an individual who is originally employed at a3
monthly salary of less than the minimum salary required for membership will4
not be eligible for purchase as prior service should that individual meet the5
minimum salary requirement for membership at a later date.6

Section 2. This Act shall become effective on June 30, 2012; if vetoed by the8
governor and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on9
June 30, 2012, or on the day following such approval by the legislature, whichever is later.10

Present law provides for membership in the Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund for certain
part-time employees receiving a monthly salary equal to or more than a certain amount.
Proposed law retains present law.
Present law provides that any such person receiving monthly salary including state
supplemental pay of not less than $800 shall be a member of the fund.
Proposed law retains present law for persons employed on or before Dec. 31, 2012.
Proposed law provides that, for persons employed after Dec. 31, 2012, each deputy,
including the criminal and civil deputies of the parish of Orleans, and the criers of the
several divisions of the Civil District Court for the parish of Orleans, who, on the date of the
filing of the application to become a member, is age eighteen or over, shall become a
member of this fund, provided his monthly salary including state supplemental pay, is not
less $1000.
Proposed law specifies that service rendered by an individual who is originally employed
at a monthly salary of less than the minimum salary required for membership will not be
eligible for purchase as prior service should that individual meet the minimum salary
requirement for membership at a later date.
Effective June 30, 2012.
