SENATE BILL NO. 594

SCHOOLS. Provides that public school transportation be made available for certain
students attending nearby technical colleges.  (8/1/12)
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 17:158(I), relative to school transportation; to provide for the transportation2
of certain students to certain technical colleges; to provide for responsibilities of city,3
parish, and other local public school boards; to provide for the adoption of rules; and4
to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 17:158(I) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7
ยง158. School buses for transportation of students; employment of bus operators;8
alternative means of transportation; improvement of school bus9
turnarounds10

I. (1) Each city, parish, and other local public school board shall provide12
free transportation to any student who is twenty-two years of age or younger13
and attending a technical college campus, that is part of the Louisiana14
Community and Technical College System, within the jurisdictional boundaries15
of the local board. If the closest technical college campus is located outside the16
jurisdictional boundaries of the local school board, the board shall coordinate17 SB NO. 594

with neighboring boards to facilitate transportation to the technical college1
campus.2
(2) The State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and the3
Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical Colleges may adopt rules in4
accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act to implement provisions of5
this Subsection.6

Proposed law requires each city, parish, and other local public school board to provide free
transportation to any student who is 22 years of age or younger and attending a technical
college campus, that is part of the La. Community and Technical College System, within the
jurisdictional boundaries of the local board. Provides that if the closest technical college
campus is located outside the jurisdictional boundaries of the local school board, proposed
law requires coordination with neighboring boards to facilitate transportation to the technical
college campus.
Proposed law allows BESE and the Board of Supervisors of Community and Technical
Colleges to adopt rules in accordance with the APA to implement provisions of proposed
law.
